Hi everyone, our family just moved this past weekend into Oakhurst. For the moment, I am staying home with my 5yo daughter, who will be starting kindergarten at Oakhurst in a few weeks. I am also expecting our second baby, so I don't plan to go back to work full time until 2009. I would love to meet some other moms in the area and make some friends (both for myself and my daughter). I would also welcome your advice on where to grocery shop, where to buy household items (walmart/target/etc.), good places to eat, things to do with my daughter, and all those kinds of things you need to know when you move to a new area.

In addition to those things, I will also be looking for part-time, temp, or contract work once kindergarten starts. I'm hoping to work while my daughter is in school and avoid having her afterschool care, so I'll need a job from 8:30 to 2 or something like that. I am a trained and experienced litigation paralegal, but I'm not limiting myself to that right now. When I go back to work full-time next year, I will most likely go back to my career, but for now I'm not too picky. Just want to contribute to the family income before baby #2 is born. Suggestions are more than welcome!

Looking forward to meeting or talking with you all!

(*I'm sure some of you have read previous postings by my husband (Pdadda) regarding our move here and the area hoods and elementary schools, and to those of you who responded, thanks so much for your advice. You all really helped us with this process.*)

A few other questions for you moms... How about some suggestions for: (1) mommy haircuts ($50 or less); (2) kid haircuts; (3) pedicures (nothing fancy, just the basics).

I love Admira at Terra Mater Salon on W Ponce.
A lot of kids (and moms) use the Supercuts in the CVS Plaza also on W Ponce...the girls in there are really good with kids.

Welcome! We have been happy with Fresche for kiddo haircuts (in Oakhurst Village - walking distance and nice to support local business). Have used Salon Red Kids in the past in Decatur square but my daughter got a couple of not so great haircuts there. I love Van Michael in Virginia Highlands, haircuts range a little based on who you see, but mine in $54. The stylists there go through a pretty rigorous training curriculum, so I feel like they really know what they are doing, never have had a bad experience.

Pedicures...I have heard that Jazmin spa is good on Ponce in Decatur. I don't get one often enough to have a good cheap place.

For shopping - I am a publix girl and either go to East Lake (a little sketchy) or the one on Clairmont, and then for fresh produce/meat/seafood I go to the Dekalb Farmer's Market (about 10 min from Oakhurst). For the rest of my shopping, I usually go over to the Edgewood Target/Best Buy/Lowe's off of Moreland.

Hope you are liking the n'hood!
