I just found this board by googling and hopefully you all can give me the scoop on the Alpharetta area. I'm a young, professional female who'll be living by herself and safety and security are my top concerns.

~Which builders are good? Which ones should be avoided at all costs? (If you want the name of a terrible builder in TN, I can help )

~Can anyone recommend townhome communities? I'll be traveling for work quite often and don't want to bother with a single family home at this point.

~Are there neighboring towns I should consider? (I'd appreciate if you could orient me by saying "to the east", etc.)

~What do utilities run in the area? Any ideas what a grocery bill for one would run?

~Any other info you wish you had known before you moved to the area/bought a home.

Thanks!

--Do you have a specific area of Alpharetta in mind? It seems to include the area from 'Dunwoody/Perimeter Mall/Ashford-Dunwoody Rd' to parts north--St Johns Creek ... and IIRC, west Gwinnett/Peachtree Industrial area
(Other neighboring communities would include St Johns Creek--Duluth, Lawrenceville, Suwanee, Cumming and Sandy Springs/East Cobb County...)

--Do you have a price range?
--Preferences for the type of community/amenities
--The utilities will vary with sq feet/design of home and the winter/summer temperatures--gas/electric --heating/cooking
--A grocery bill for a single person would also vary widely--if you are traveling--you might be eating out more often? Maybe $100 wk in groceries???

--I think everyone in Atlanta agrees that a careful study of traffic is a prerequisite prior to purchasing in this area.

Lots of opportunity in Alpharetta---best to come and visit the area and drive the route you would take at different times of day. Northpoint Mall is a big shopping area--and the Mall of Georgia is not too far from that. Lots of choices.

The Chattahoochee River and the north GA mountains are great for R and R.
Welcome to Georgia.

I assume you're going to be working in Alpharetta, if so, where? That will have an impact on your decision if dealing with the traffic is a part of your decision. There's alot of construction going on GA400 in the Alpharetta area so you'll have to take that into consideration.

My company division headquarters is on Windward Parkway, and my wife and I are considering relocating to the area from NJ. Traffic is a major factor in our decision, so we're looking in areas in Forsyth county where I could take backroads to where the office is.

What part of Alpharetta are you going to be working in? There is a lot of traffic on surface roads, so you could live in alpharetta and still have a 20-30 commute.

Are you sure you want to buy a townhouse? There are a ton of complexes going up and some people say resale potential is not great.

In terms of groceries..you have a great variety of stores. You can hit up walmart for cheap stuff or Whole Foods/trader joes for upscale stuff. I live alone and spend about $125 per month on groceries (eat out 3x a week).

Diana, we could provide more effective answers if you would give us your general price range for a townhome.
