Hi everyone! My name is Lisa and my husband and I are relocating to Cobb County in the next couple of months. We currently live in Huntington Beach, California (So. Cal.). My husbands job will be in Austell. Just wondering if anyone would like to offer up some good cities near there to live in. Was told Austell shouldn't be on the list?!?! We love music, eating out and we don't have kids (so not looking for good schools, haha).

Thanks!!! Lisa

You could live in either Smyrna or Douglasville and commute to Austell if you don't want to live there. Smyrna would get you closer to Atlanta for entertainment, shopping and dining.

Price range for housing?

Why live in a city at all? Many of the nice places to live in the Atlanta area are actually located in between the actual incorporated cities.

Some of those areas have their own names (Mableton and Vinings are two that leap to my mind since I live in the SE corner of Cobb County), mainly for historic reasons and/or because they actually have their own post office even though they aren't a city. Since the county tends to provide services down here like fire, police, and schooling, the lack iof a city doesn't seem to mean all that much. Except lower taxes. :-)

For those outside of the state -- The Atlanta metro area is a little weird, or at least it was to me coming from the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro -- it has no legal "township" entity at all that I'm aware of, so a community is apparently either a city or completely unincorporated.

This (plus other historic factors) has resulted in the metro counties being mostly unincorporated with a few scattered islands that are the actual incorporated cities. If you look at a map like this:

http://www.terragotech.com/fromcustomers/gallery/Cobb_County_Transit.pdf (broken link)

everything that isn't colored as a "municipality" is unincorporated, which in Cobb's case is the majority of the county.

Contrast that with Minneapolis, where everything is either a township or a city from the core outwards for at least 30 miles in all directions. There are no holes at all in the metro, and cities or townships extend outwards until they hit other cities or townships.
