If you're used to living in an urban neighborhood in Chicago, DO NOT MOVE TO THE SUBURBS! No offense to those who live in the suburbs on these boards, but they are really "Anyplace, America." They're great if you want semi-rural living, but in terms of traffic and landscape, they're a nightmare. Crime is also growing rapidly in the suburbs while decreasing in the city.

Urban neighborhoods such as Inman Park, Candler Park, Cabbagetown, Kirkwood, and East Atlanta have a sense of place with traditional southern architecture and a little bit of a walkable environment. Also, the retail establishments are fairly unique, although this is changing as larger chains are starting to recognize the retail potential of Intown neighborhoods. The only suburbs that I would consider would be East Point, College Park, and Decatur. But in regards to choosing the suburbs vs. the city, I would definitely choose the city. But then again, I am a single 29 year old male.

I totally agree with the above post about in-town neighborhoods, and my preference would have been to live in E. Atlanta, Inman Park, or Midtown, etc...The fact is that I couldn't afford to buy a house in any of those areas because they were way out of my price range. I think the original post mentioned $150,000, and I doubt there is anything in those areas for that price. In East Point I found something in my price range that wasn't refurbished completely but was move-in ready and I had enough money to gut and remodel the kitchen. Plus I'm 5 minutes from downtown, 10 minutes from midtown....that was the clincher...and a Marta station is walking distance from my house.

sprtsluvr8,

...and don't forget about the new Thumbs Up Diner that opened up in Downtown East Point near the MARTA station. The best breakfast in Atlanta by far!

I've seen it but haven't ever been to the one in E. Point. It's on Whiteway isn't it?

Exactly. It's on White Way and it's a good alternative to the more crowded Edgewood location. The food is great!

There seems to be a trend of city revitalizing, and more and more people are moving into town. The traffic from the suburb to downtown is terrible and the fuel cost is getting higher and higher quickly. A condo or a loft some place like Atlantic station would really be a great choice.
