HI. What grade is your son? Is he a strong student or is he in a vocational program because he is not? (Many times, strong students opt for a vocational program because that is where their interests lie.)

In Georgia, students must pass the high school graduation exam to graduate high school. There are very few exceptions -- ever. If they fail, they have up to 5 times to pass. Nearly a 1/3 fail the science test on the first attemp.

Many years ago, I visisted a Gwinnett vocational program and it was my understanding that the students there had already passed the high school graduation exam. So it is possible that he would have to go into a mostly traditional program before having access to a vocational one. (except perhaps his electives.)

I think that transferring in as a senior would be a miserable experience. School is almost over here for the year -- hard to believe but we are out before Memorial day, so you are talking three months or so -- and spring break is in there as well.

Do you have to make this move now? What is driving you? Is your son excited about school and his senior year? Georgia has a very poor record with kids who are inclined to drop out -- so it is possible that he could fall between the cracks. Also, he would still need to pass the High School graduation exam.
