My granddaughter will be turning five in June. She has a room full of toys and does not need another. I want to do something special. I have heard about a train ride up in the North Georgia mountians. We (Grandpa and I) could take her and spend the night and really make it special. Or I as Grandma could take her to a tea room and just the two of us. And then take her to a special store and buy an outfil. I just don't want to hand over another useless toy.

Any inventive ideas out there? We are northwest of Atlanta.

Maybe you're thinking about the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad? But it's not North Georgia: it starts in Bryson City.

Home Page - GSMR

They have packages that include an overnight stay in Bryson City before the ride. I've wanted to do this for some time now but can never seem to find the time.

When our daughter turned 5 we had a party for her at the Tanglewood Miniature farm in Canton. Except for the unseasonably high temperatures (heat wave last June) everyone enjoyed it.

The train ride you're talking about might be the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. I've been on it, and it's fun. Kinda.

Well, it'll be fun for the granddaughter, as there's usually about 1140 OTHER 5 year olds on the train at the same time, too. For adults - um...

Be forewarned, on weekends, buy your tickets in advance on that web site. They DO fill up.

Alternatives: "SAM" shortline excursions, but it's about 140 miles South of Atlanta: SAM Shortline Railway - SAM Shortline | Southeast Georgia Excursion Train - Travel, Ride, Sightseeing, Families, Kids But SAM and the Blue Ridge one are pretty much the two most popular ones that are extended rail trips.

Of course you could always take her to Stone Mountain for the day: http://stonemountainpark.com/ as they have a short train trip among tons of other stuff for kids to do now, too. I mean realistically, 5-year olds barely know what planet they're on much of the time anyway, and they lose attention VERY fast - going someplace where you hop from thing to do to thing to do like Stone Mountain might be better. She could ride a train, boat, and climb trees all in the same day.

Blue Ridge had enough shops right around the train depot to keep my wife busy for the better part of an afternoon , and the combined town on the other end was amusing to visit. The train ride itself was rather relaxing, I thought.
