I would seriously love to live in Macon, work in Atlanta, and play in Savannah! That would be perfect! Plus the nice beaches are a shorter drive from Macon than Atlanta.

Sigh...
One thing to mention for the boosters of the fall line cities. Don't get too hung up on High speed rail you miss the regional rail opportunities.

If HSR does happen, it is ultimately an expensive long-term vision.

I would examine the potential for Georgia's regional rail service on existing freight tracks. It will help add access to Hartsfield airport and business opportunities working with Atlanta companies. It would be downtown to downtown service at freeway speeds with a direct connection to the airport for $15-$25.

There is currently a thread regarding Atlanta to Savannah passenger rail, so I thought I'd bump this older thread.

Personally I think the best thing Georgia could do for rail would be a good line up to Charlotte, going through Athens if feasible. Hopefully Charlotte would have good service to Raleigh-Durham and then on up to the Bos-Wash corridor.

Regarding options completely within Georgia, I think a Savannah line would make the most sense, as it is the third largest metro, a popular tourist destination, and is possibly in line for some significant growth with the port improvements.

I know Augusta has a larger Metro, but Savannah feels so much bigger.

Haven't read up much on this... I'm assuming this is Georgia taxpayers money being heavily involved here?

I say Macon for two reasons
A) it is the closest
B) I think for the best route to Savannah you would need to stop in Macon
Ultimately though I would like to see one go to Savannah.

I'm for HSR to Savannah.... then connecting to Orlando via Jacksonville. That would make it more feasible.

Does Atlanta have plans on expanding the Marta into other suburban counties in Metro Atlanta?

No. In order for that to happen, the counties need to vote and say they want it and are willing to pay for it.

How fast does it have to be to qualify as HSR?

It seems to me a nice train that could do 75 mph would be just fine for intrastate hops. That would get you to Athens and Macon in an hour, and Macon, Greenville, Chattanooga, Augusta and Birmingham in two or less.

Add another 30 minutes and you've got regional destinations like Savannah, Nashville, Knoxville, Charlotte.

This is a late response, and I haven't read the complete thread, but I'd add that Savannah has Amtrak going north/south, and this would allow an Atlanta-Macon-Savannah connection for anyone traveling to Florida.
