The job isn't M_F 9-5. It's some weekends, some weekdays off, and start time will vary. Some days 5 am, others 2 pm. Would that make it more bearable?

Maybe. I don't think Bob Kovacs was kidding when he said leave by 4 AM.

I happened to catch the Suwanee traffic headed south one day around 5 AM and it crawls for miles.

Suwanee traffic at 5am ? I'm surprised there is that much traffic 30 miles from Atlanta that early in the day.

It'll be "better" than going in at 7am, but it'll probably still be more than 45 minutes- I'm thinking +/- an hour.

The main problems will be on I-85 south (out of Gwinnett) which can be horrible, and I-285 west from 85 through "the Dunwoodys". Once you clear GA 400 on the outer loop you should be fine, and I-75 north is fine as well in the morning. You will be subject to the opposite delays in the afternoon. Two or three times a month I make the commute from west Cobb to just north of Gwinnett Place, and I usually hit zero traffic beyond some very minor congestion on the I-285 inner loop, from 75 east to approaching GA400. Trip time is 45 - 60 minutes.

The real question is: where in Marietta? It could make a HUGE difference if you're talking west Cobb on Dallas Hwy versus east Cobb near Sandy Plains Rd. Depending on exactly where in Suwanee and Marietta, you might be better off going the non-interstate routes through Roswell. You may be surprised that it doesn't take as long as people will make you believe. In Atlanta, traffic is very directional and specific to route, and some people exaggerate the actual impacts.

I've been here 16 months now and haven't seen the "horrible traffic" that people talk about on the routes that I take. In fact, when I go, my commute to/from Marietta/Alpharetta has been essentially traffic free. It's those damn 10 min traffic lights with arrows in all directions that cause me to be delayed.

It was before 6AM, of that I am certain and I saw a lot of school buses. I wasn't on the interstate, FWIW. I vividly remember sitting in stop and go traffic and when I could see the interstate it was bumper to bumper for miles--or so it seemed to me.

I am always amazed at people who move to or settle in areas in Atlanta and have jobs on the other side of the state.

Friday afternoon commute anywhere from 3-7 pm could be 2-3 hours in one direction..... worse on a holiday weekend.

Be sure you have something to do (like a gym membership) so you can kill time close to work when you want to avoid peak traffic.

Where are you commuting to/from that it's taken you 2-3 hours?

I'm one of the lucky souls who happen to commute the other way (cumming to suwanee) and it's pretty laughable at how I'm flying in a free lane and the cars in the other direction are just crawling along.

And this isn't even on a highway, it's on side roads. Yeah the commute is THAT bad. I would look for another job with a better location.
