WABE is funded by the Fulton County Board of Education, corporate and personal gifts and foundation grants. Donations are tax deductible though, which is a form of Federal support.

If you join and send a donation, you will be surveyed on the type of programming you like and can influence programming. You can register your opinions with elected School Board members as well.

I listen to NPR all day long through other avenues, but WABE is my station of choice for local news, weather and traffic in the afternoons.

I just bought an HD-Radio enabled car stereo a month or so ago and there are two other WABE HD channels in addition to the main one. The second plays all classical music which is pointless since the main channel plays so much. The third has Talk of the Nation and the BBC on when I usually listen to it. I don't think it plays any music.

I've always enjoyed WUTC in Chattanooga. They play a lot of contemporary stuff, even some hard rock. It's sort of like DaveFM at times except way less lame. They also play some bluegrass and folksy stuff.

WUTC FM 88.1 Chattanooga Home (http://www.wutc.org/index.html - broken link)

Don't get me wrong. I enjoy classical music but Atlanta needs another option and I think it can support it. For such a large city, Atlanta has some of the lamest radio stations.

And also, Lois Reitzes's voice irritates the crap out of me.

Years ago, I was surprised to learn that NPR extended beyond morning and evenings when I had lived in other cities.

Atlanta FM/AM radio has many limitations for a city its size. At least this limitation in Atlanta is lesser of an issue as we have other options, satellite choices, etc.
