Robbers shoot bar worker in head | ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2009/01/07/standard_bar_shooting.html?cxntlid=homepage_tab_ne wstab - broken link)

This is crazy...I was about to grab a bite to eat here last night and I drive by the place quite often it seemed like it was doing quite well with alot of people always inside. I love motor shop/restaurant conversion restaurants. Sad that one of the workers might not live. The criminals broke the huge front out window out with a large object to enter which is crazy to think of. I used to bartend at a well known establish on Peachtree and we never got robbed but on the weekends we had an Off-Duty Police Officer in the front because of the large crowds. Weekdays were a different story but since we were between downtown and midtown a criminal would have to be crazy to rob a place with such high visibility. On that Block of Memorial Drive it's still kind of dodgy sometimes but there is a large amoount of restaurants and urban pioneers that are turning that area around. Sad.

How sad. The worker did die at Grady Hospital. I have eaten there several times (earlier than later in the evening so I could eat before the smokers really came out).

The Lamplighter was robbed on Christmas Day and they don't know when they will reopen. Unfortunately, desperate times have shown us great disparity.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all that were affected by this senseless and violent crime.

I have also eaten at The Standard, this is so very sad. Its even more disgusting that they killed a guy who did exactly what he was told.

How would a gun have protected him again 4 people? Especially if more then one of them was armed? I am all for carrying guns, but I seriously don't see how this would have helped.

Cause his clip can more than 1 bullet. Hell with a shotgun you could get all 4 with one shot. If my window breaks at 4 a.m. you can be damn sure I'm walking out of my office/bedroom with gun in hand.

Don't worry, Shirley Franklin has reassured residents that crime is down in Atlanta.

Yeah, the victim could have aimed and shot all four robbers while they stood there not shooting back.

That's realistic.

The idea that carrying or stashing guns would in any way prevent this kind of incident is the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard. Exhausted food service workers at 4am, even if there are guns on premises, aren't going to be trained to protect their bar/restaurant like it's an armed fortification. They can easily be ambushed coming out/going in as well.

I hope the perpetrators are caught.

First of all, this isn't going to get into a "gun ownership vs. non gun ownership" argument.

Second, I hope all four are caught and given the death penalty. Hopefully the store had a decent camera system and they were caught on video clearly. Robbing is one thing (bad enough) but to bust in when employees are there and murder them in such a way after they've given you their money? No - you are no longer human after that - you're some form of weird animal life and don't deserve anything but to be removed from human society forever.

Third, a lot of shop/store owners will have standard glass in their doors and windows. I strongly urge shop/store owners to have "laminated" glass in their doors and windows, and to even spend the extra money to have "impact resistant film" installed on them as well. Yes, you're talking a few dollars extra, but you're making it much much harder for people to break into your establishment in this manner. A few dollars is well worth protecting the lives of your employees and patrons.
