Hello. Probably should have found out exactly what this was before I bought. But.... Is it some type of pine resin from the trees, and will it come off readily? Power washing? Thanks!!!

If you're talking about the dark streaks, I was told it's fungus. I doubt it pine resin since I've seen houses that have it and no pine trees in sight. One of my neighbors tried to power wash it, but it didn't work.

Yeah, the dark streaks. So many roofs have them, and it does detract from the beauty of the home. If not power washing then what I wonder?

Fungus/mildew. Happens on older roofs in forrested areas, especially on the dark side of the home. Best you could do is clear the trees away so the sunlight gets through. Thats why the new subdivisions that people complain so much about cut all vegetation away, among other reasons. Our climate is rather tropical as odd as it may be

It's a fungus. When we had our new roof put on we specified 'fungus resistant shingles' so far so good. It's almost a year old. No stains.

I think the black marks occur a lot in the SE of the US. I remember seeing it on home roofs in MS and SC too.

There are services that can supposedly clean the roof stains, if you Google "roof fungus" you will see some options. I have also heard that diluted OxyClean or other Oxygen bleaches can get rid of the stains, but I don't know that for sure.

Gloeocapsa magma is blue-green algae, which is cyanobacteria, it is a type of algae. The blue-green algae, unicellular, accumulate over time; this accumulation begins to show the problematic black stains as the cyanobacteria develop their dark and hard UV-protective outer coating. Power washing will not remove them. The roof will need to be cleaned using special chemicals and low pressure. High pressure can damage the shingles.

Default clean your roof!

The best way to get debris off your roof is by using this really cool device called a ROOFBEE. You simply toss it on your roof where there are leaves and pine needles and it pulls down the debris. It's actually fun and very easy to use. I never have to worry about my husband falling and hurting himself. NO more ladders!
