I live in California and I’ll be retiring in about a year. I’m considering retiring to Atlanta area and I have been receiving E-mail from several home development sites. I recently received some info about some place called Edenwood in Dallas Ga. Wondering if anyone can offer any insight on this area and community. Thanks

Paul's insightful and articulate answer aside, the Atlanta area is growing in popularity for active adults. The mild winters, low cost of living, culture, and proximity to relatives that may live in the southeast make it attractive. We're seeing an explosion of half-backers - people from the northeast who move to Florida and then move halfway back to Atlanta.

Paulding County grew at a tremendous rate in the early/mid 2000's. It was viewed as a cheaper alternative to Cobb, but now it has an oversupply of developed lots and existing home inventory. You should be able to find a good deal there now. The main problem with the Dallas area is highway access. It can be rather difficult to get into the city.

Atlanta certainly isn't perfect but my wife used to live in CA, so I can understand if you'd like to get away from the earthquakes, fires, rolling blackouts, pollution, and ridiculous taxes. Good luck!

I moved from Santa Clarita, CA 2.5 yrs ago. I chose COBB County for the schools. Since that won't be an issue for you Paulding might be a nice place to live. It borders COBB County but has cheaper homes. Please know the only thing cheaper in GA is you get more house for your money and gasoline is cheaper by 10-15 cents a gallon. Natural gas is much more expenisive as is water. So don't expect to save alot of money moving here.

Good luck,
Debbi

YMMV, but coming from L.A. last year, I've found auto insurance to be MUCH cheaper here, with modest savings in food, gasoline, taxes, labor costs (home improvement is much cheaper here), etc.

Utilitity costs are slightly up, but I attribute much of that to the fact that my home is twice as large, not even counting the basement.

Again, YMMV.

DebbiW, gas is cheaper by a lot in GA I'd say about 60 cents. When I was in Culver City I was shocked that a gallon of milk was $9.50. The utility bills were the same if not higher in GA but overall GA is a lot cheaper than CA. Even the places to eat is less expensive, public transportation, groceries, property and sales/use tax, and child care is much less in GA than CA.
