The principal selection for the new NE elementary school (under construction on Ponce de Leon, and expected to open this fall) was announced last night by APS. They have selected Yolanda Brown, current principal of C.W. Hill elementary. Just wondering if anyone has any direct info. or experience with this person. Thanks.

I have met her, but that is all. There should have been a community panel utilized in the principal selection process (I served on one for the selection of the principal for my neighborhood school in APS). Check with CINS (CINS Home). Any of their officers should have info about her. Or check with anyone on the Hill local school council

From my understanding, there was a community panel utilized in the selection process.

I didn't mean to there wasn't, I just meant that there likely was and that members of that panel would be excellent resources to find out about the new principal.

I guess as long as they don't try to bring in a bunch of fourth-ward kids it may work out.

I can tell you this, C.W. Hill has one of the absolutely worst school environments I have ever experienced. The "vibe" of the school is tense and disorganized. Let's put it this way, there is more than one "screaming teacher", as I like to call them. And, I fully believe the school environment begins at the top. I fault the principal for allowing that type of behavior. I know nothing about the proposed new school, but I do know that C.W. Hill is a mess.

Default ITP's Dirty Little Secret

Moderator edit: response in reference to prior deleted posts.
This has been an issue in other ITP places as well--in the City Schools of Decatur there have been recent (post-millenium), covert issues about the race of new principals when placed in majority white schools.

The funny thing is that are many examples of black principals in super-white schools in the the suburban, OTP areas--and the communities have embraced and thrived with the black principals. (Some examples...Mountain View Elementary (East Cobb), Lassiter High (East Cobb--a few years ago), Rocky Mount Elementary (East Cobb--90's)...and there are many other examples))

My post may or may not have been racist, but it was true. When it comes to the City of Atlanta government, being african-american trumps any other qualification. This lady may be a fine person, but is she the most qualified person out there? I'm not so sure. At to ITP's "dirty little secret", people may be liberal, but they are not stupid. Why do you think most of the private schools are ITP? Most whites and asians do not want to send their kids to a majority black school. Most african-americans don't even want to. Sorry, but a lot of black kids cause too many disruptions, and they require too much of the teachers time because they start school fairly far behind most other kids. Why should my kids suffer because so many black kids come from households headed by young, uneducated mothers who don't value education that much? The people in Cobb county may tolerate a black principal, but I promise they will pull their kids out if the percentage of african-american students approaches 40%. Although with this economy they may be stuck.
