My son was in the public school system in South Florida. What a disaster, all they did was give him bad behaviors. T Thanks to a good Africian American school and and a retired Special Needs teacher. He is on grade level and is a "B-" student and has minor behaviors. What do they have in Alpharetta or the surrounding areas?

The Howard School is excellent but it isn't close to Alpharetta. See www.howardschool.org.

The Howard School looks great but it is very expensive especially when I have another child. Fortunately in Florida we had a scholarship program called "McKay Scholarship" which is a full paid voucher for all incomes.

Can1

Georgia may be about to pass a scholarship similar to McKay but your child has to be a current Georgia public school child to be eligible to utillize the scholarship the following school year.

I have done a ton of reading about the McKay and get the impression that most families who utilize it, don't use special needs schools. Are you using a special needs school or did you just find a private school that worked for your child?

You won't find an African-American school in Alpharetta or for that matter anywhere in North Metro. Those types of schools are found in South DeKalb, South Fulton and South Atlanta, primiarily and I am not sure any of them go to high school, but by now, some might.

All the schools that specifically serve kids with special needs tend to be very expensive. BUT, if your son can function in a typical classroom, but just needs the smaller environment and more structure, let me know. I may have some suggestions. let me know.

There are two schools close to you in Alpharetta. Look into Mill Springs Academy and the Cottage School.

Our son's still in middle school, and is able to function reasonably well in public school, but we have neighbors with similar kids who're very happy with Mill Springs Academy.

Also check out the Lionheart School. It's for autistic kids, as well as kids with other developmental disabilities. I've met some of the administration, and I think that their approach is research-based and reasonable. It is, in fact, in Alpharetta.

Good luck!
