So, if we decided to bend on the public transportation thing and get a house further out, what areas would everyone recommend, given our budget around $150,000? I would not want to commute more than an hour downtown, and would prefer to keep the commute between 30-45 minutes. (Of course, even shorter is great too!) Are there certain areas I should definitely avoid as far as places that have the worst traffic into downtown?
Unfortunately, I don't have a choice in moving right now. The position I am in right now is a 2-year clerkship I took after graduating from law school, so I need to find a new job and most likely a new city. I am in St. Louis right now, but am not originally from here. I am looking for federal government jobs, so I have been looking in many different cities. Many of the cities are less affordable than Atlanta (i.e., Denver).

Others will have more specific advice but $150,000 homes are very rare anywhere within an hour of Atlanta. Possibly NW Atlanta is the better area if you plan to work downtown.

Realistically it might be best to rent closer to the city at first.

I know if sounds like a drag to rent (and I probably sound like a nagging mother) but you really do need to rent first. In your price range, for a single family home, you are going to really have to do your homework. You can't just fly in for a weekend and expect to find something in a great neighborhood. You will need to do your research.

I haven't been to St. Louis in forever, but if I recall correctly, ATL is far more complicated. There are nice places and not so nice places to live in every direction from downtown. Lots of suburbs, cities, towns etc make up Metro Atlanta.
