I've really been getting excited about the upcoming school year for my little guy. He's excited as well and we're looking for the open house in a couple of weeks. I was looking at the school website and came across information about uniforms. This surprised me because back home the only schools that had uniforms were in low-income or high-violence neighborhoods. I looked at the websites for the other schools in Dekalb and Kingsley seems to be the only elementary school with uniforms. Of course, I may well have overlooked it. I realize that since it's a charter school this could just be a part of that, but it's really making me nervous.

I think that some kids wear uniforms at Austin, but it may be optional. Check with lastminutemom; she probably knows.

Chesnut and Kingsley and Austin students all wear uniforms.

Most kids (90 percent) wear uniforms to Austin, Chesnut and Kingsley have it as part of their charter as does Woodland Elementary which is also a charter in the part of Fulton that is Dunwoody.

Peachtree Middle has a sort of blend of uniform/strict dress code.

Many elementary schools in DeKalb have uniforms.

The system just did a survey that ended Friday which will determine future dress codes/uniforms at schools that don't currently have them.

Most parents love uniforms -- it really keeps the battles at home down. I have no idea if they improve academic achievement but I do think the kids generally look more ready to learn.

Americans seem to really make a big thing out of uniforms.

Come to Australia. Pretty much all schools have uniforms.

Most kids either like them or dont care either way. Sure they 'customise' them. But they still identify with the school.

It's not the uniforms...Americans make a really big thing out of having freedom of expression, and uniforms take some of that freedom away. I support school uniform policies and hope more schools will see the benefits.

Dekalb does have additional elementary and middle schools where students, and sometimes staff, wear school uniforms. As a teacher I wouldn't mind at all - it would eliminate some required decision making from my busy day.

I've read (and observed) that uniforms have a positive affect on school discipline and diminish the number of conflicts between students...which would logically lead to improvements in academic achievement.
