Yeah, I don't have a problem with it as long as they don't outnumber the mom and pop places. In Candler Park there's a San Francisco Coffee shop a block from The Flying Biscuit and Doc Bombays. They all seem to offer a little unique something. San Fran offers internet and the usual coffee house acoutraments. Flying Biscuit (the bakery not the cafe) offers unique pastries. Doc Bombay's offers ice cream...

Actually, it is good to have some chain restaurants/other chains in a neighborhood.
The balance betweeen chain and mom+pop makes for a healthier commercial mix.
Reason? Chains weather economic downturns much better.
The City of Decatur actually approached this issue several years ago--they saw that Decatur's downtown was too dependent on mom+pop...so they actively sought more chain restaurants, etc...ensuring that the overall health of the downtown/commercial districts would be healthy long-term.
It's all about a healthy balance.

Whether or not a chain restaurant degrades the surrounding neighborhood is mostly a matter of personal taste--but too many chain restaurants (as in Gwinnett County, say) can be suffocating.
