Is anyone out there familiar with Chicago... I'm a Hyde Parker and looking to move to Atlanta. If you're from Chicago you'll know what I mean... I'm a med school student and single mom of a 5 year old boy. I would be looking for a 2 bedroom house but would settle for a townhome and can pay up to $1100. Excellent schools are an absolute must.

Thanks a million!

Emory Medical School or Morehouse?

Or are you coming for a residency?

I would check into the City of Decatur. The schools are consistently good and small enough that it would give you and your son a sense of community. I am sure you know it won't be easy going to medical school with a small child.

It is important that you are careful -- some places call themselves Decatur but aren't within the city limits. Some of those areas are dreadful.

Other nearby elementary schools that are good are Fernbank, Oak Grove, Sagamore etc but they are larger and probably won't be as easy to form a community from.

You might also want to look at the Candler Park & Lake Claire neighborhoods in Atlanta, which both might look and feel a little more like Hyde Park. The kids there attend Mary Lin Elementary, another good elementary school.

And if test scores are important to you, you might want to look at school ranking web sites (like greatschools.net) for the rundown on any school you're considering.

Included in the Mary Lin district is Inman Park and Poncey-Highland, though a small amount of students will go to the new Springdale Park School. However, that school is a new school made up of Mary Lin and Morningside students. Both Mary Lin and Morningside are two of the best Atlanta Public Schools elementary schools (though there are several very good ones in APS) so the new school will be excellent.

Also consider Virginia-Highland and Morningside/Lenox Park, in the Morningside ES zone.

$1100 should carry you far. I own a duplex in the Candle Park neighborhood and live in the bottom apartment with my husband and son (who is about to finish second grade at Mary Lin). We rent the upstairs apartment out for $1200/mo. It's a 2 bedroom/1 bath plus sunporch, about 1100 sqft.

So, based on that you should be able to find something for $900-$1100 in the good school areas.

Just for the record, all of Poncey-Highland will now attend Springdale Park Elementary.
