I may be moving to Atlanta with two small children. I will be working downtown. I have two small children (3 and 6) and will need to take them to school and pre-school. My main concern is finding an area that will allow me to drop off the kids, get to work and get back to the kids. I want good schools and a safe area. I would also like Marta access if possible.

I have been looking at renting options in the Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, East Cobb and Decatur areas. Are these appropriate areas for my needs? How long would it take to get from these areas to downtown and vice versa? Also, would the Marta be faster? If there are better areas to consider I am open to all suggestions.

Finally, reagrding schools, do the schools there have after school care programs? Thank you.

East Cobb would require a bus to get into town, perhaps with a transfer to the train. Cobb County isn't directly served by MARTA, instead they have their own bus service that connects to MARTA.

Let's work backwards -- do you know what time you will need to be at work?

I'd be concerned about your travel time from East Cobb.

However, regarding after school care programs, Cobb County School District elementary schools generally do offer ASP (After School Program). It runs until 6pm.

A few years ago, I was chatting with a Roswell mom at a kids' sports event, and learned that they didn't have ASP at her child's school, at that time. I got the impression there was no such thing in Fulton County schools. Now this is just hearsay information, and it's old. Since it sounds like after-school care will be vital to your family, you should definitely check and find out for sure, before committing to a particular place to rent.

My start time would be flexible. I could start from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., but with the kids needing to get dropped off I would probably start at 8 or 8:30.

What would the driving commute be from East Cobb to downtown?
