Looks like Atlanta got another one. After reading the reasons why NCR is moving its HQ to Atlanta it leads me to believe more could be on the way.

NCR to move headquarters to Duluth | ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/business/content/business/stories/2009/06/01/ncr_prize_to_duluth.html - broken link)

NCR move could boost Atlanta's tech base | ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/business/content/business/stories/2009/06/01/ncr_atlanta.html - broken link)

Viva La Atlanta!!!

I thought NCR moved its HQ years ago to Duluth off Satellite Blvd. I guess that was just a regional office.

Nah, that was a manufacturing plant turned into retail division HQ. Not really a tech gain b/c most of the jobs from Dayton are admin, HR, and finance vs. tech which was sold off or shipped to India and the Philippines. The avg salary is only 70k including the CEO and high level management meaning most of the jobs make less than a GT grad 3-4 yrs out.

Also they're just about to fall off the Fortune 500 list. They're now 391 when they had 6.1B in '08 and still having falling revenues now. They were 115 in 1955 and 357 in 2006 if you see a trend.

Overall a good deal for Metro Atlanta, but why Duluth? Seems like if the State is overing 60mm(twice as much as Ohio), why not move the jobs to Downtown, Midtown and especially in Buckhead where they should be giving office space away.

Because the state is consistently disdainful of the capital city.

Why does everyone seem to think its no big deal unless the jobs are tech jobs and pay big. Average salary of $70K is good and means those people will be buying houses etc.

I too would like to see it intown but I am sure office rates are cheaper in Duluth then Midtown.

This is nothing more than a cost saving measure by them.

It's good for the tax base of the City of Duluth of course, but yeah, you have to consider the fact that traffic is bad out there, and there is no "real" public transit in that area. In more recent times, some companies have shunned Atlanta locations for these reasons, so it does seem an odd pic for a larger company in terms of location.

Here's why:

As someone else said, rents/ownership are cheaper. Second, there's a HUGE number of Mexican immigrants in that area for the "filler jobs", and pay scales are much lower down here in General. They're going to save a bundle in payroll by moving here. So the City of Duluth in general will be the biggest winner simply from the taxes coming in.

Another deterent to The City is Atlanta charges more for water. Water is used in every manufacturing industry.

If we're talking about the corporate wankers then I guess the city would make more sense.

Not really. Why pay high-dollar downtown/midtown/Buckhead rental rates for what's mostly support staff? There's no reason to pay $25/sf for a highrise when you can get Class A space in Duluth or another suburban office park for $15-18/sf. The only people who need to pay the top $$ rents are those that need to be near other companies due to interaction with them (lawyers, etc), or those that need a "status address".

It's the same reason there's such a huge suburban office market in NJ- all the companies that don't need to be in NYC, but need to be somewhat close by can rent for 1/2 of what they'd pay in the city.
