How bad of a commute is that?

Depends on where you're starting and ending, but generally it's going to be pretty painful because there's nothing but two-lane roads between the two.

Again, it's a do-able commute if you're not too far west/north in Canton, or too far east/north in Alpharetta, and if you're somewhat close to 20 or 140, but it's not an ideal situation unless you're able to avoid the rush hours. All it takes is one person trying to turn left at an intersection that doesn't have a light, and you can get a 1/2-mile backup.

It's is do-able; however, I wouldn't recommend commuting from Canton to Alpharetta because traffic can be brutal here especially if there is an accident. Depending upon start & end locations, commute could take anywhere between 40 minutes to 1 1/2 hrs or more. If work is in Alpharetta, but person/family doesn't want to live in Alpharetta, there are many nice neighborhoods to choose from surrounding Alpharetta.

GA 20 to 400 or 75 to 92. It's good to have multiple options.

I work in Alpharetta and it's great. Its historic downtown area is small, but new businesses are popping up, even in this economic climate.

I know of someone who commutes from the Windward area of Alpharetta to Northside in Canton and it takes him 45 minutes both ways. (He has to be at work by 8.) He doesn't sit in traffic, but takes a lot of tiny side roads.

Another example of how the state government has put all of its transportation eggs in one basket - the interstates.
