Work Commutes (Atlanta, Dunwoody, Norcross: homes, salary, to live)

Just out of curiosity, how far do you all travel from your homes to jobs? As in the miles you travel each way and how long it takes. As well what is your limits for how far you will travel? As in my other post Im thinking of working in Cumming but live in the Dunwoody or Norcross (30092) areas. That would be about 15-20 miles each way for 6 days a week. Ive gotten opinions from family/friends and the consensus is that it would be a lot of "wear and tear" on my car. Thats why I would like to know how far all of you travel. Thanks!!

My commute is 36 miles each way, and takes 35-40 minutes in the morning, and 55-60 minutes in the afternoon on most days. Yes, its a lot of miles on the car, but it's well worth it because it allows us to live where we want to live, while still taking advantage of the ability to earn a higher salary working for a larger firm based in the city.

My commute is 5 miles, Oakhurst to Grant Park. On the worst of in town traffic days, it takes all of 10 minutes. I wouldn't have it any other way. I don't know how anyone spends upwards of 10 hours in a car on a weekly basis, but it's obviously a personal preference and worth it to a lot of metro Atlantans.

My commute is 12 miles. It can take anywhere from 25 minutes to an hour. It all depends on how many idiots and a-holes are on the roads being true to themselves.

My commute from Buckhead to Midtown:

4 blocks to the train (usually walking, but sometimes by bus)
2 stations south on the Gold line to Arts Center
Walk 3 blocks to office

Time: Around 15 to 20 minutes.
Distance: I dunno, 5 or 6 miles I guess. I'm usually staring off into space on the train

Zero currently, since we both work from home.

In years past, I've always made a point to live close to work and usually kept the commute down to a mile or two. On occasion, however, I've had commutes of up to 6 or 7 miles.

I assume y'all are referring to time behind the wheel only when you talk about handling a 31 mile commute in 30 minutes, or 15 miles in 20 minutes. Portal to portal has got to be longer than than that, even if your actual drive time is averaging 60 miles an hour.

How do you figure? My "starting portal" is my driveway, and my "ending portal" is my office parking lot, which is a 2-minute walk from my desk. What you're referring to is when someone says "my train ride to work is 40 minutes", but forgets to mention the 10-minute ride to the station, time spent finding a parking space, waiting for the train, and walking from the train to the office, which can turn that 40-minute train ride into a 1.5 hour commute. Those tactics were used all the time by realtors in NJ, telling people "30 minute train ride to NYC", when reality was 2-3x that door-to-door.
