Does anyone know of any reputable dog breeders or adoption centers? In late October / Early November I'm hoping to find a doberman pinscher puppy as a birthday present for my girlfriend.

If not that particular breed I just wanted to know of some places in the Atlanta metro area where I can look at other breeds if a doberman is not available.

I'm moving to Sandy Springs from NY in about 3 weeks but would like to start searching now. I'm willing to travel 30-40 miles outside the Atlanta area if need be.

Thanks!

Atlanta Humane Society - Atlanta Pet Rescue & Pet Adoption in Georgia – AHS

The Atlanta Humane Society on Howell Mill Rd/I75 would be closer to Sandy Springs than PAWS which is located in DeKalb County on Covington Hwy, east of Stone Mountain.

Atlanta Doberman Rescue---from Google--other breeders are listed.

I would recommend the adoption centers the previous posters cited. Reputable breeders have extremely long waiting lists. Therefore if you ended up actually paying you would be buying someone someone who took shortcuts, which can result if a dog with serious health problems. Good luck to you.

This is one of my soap box topics. There are so many unloved but sweet, wonderful animals in shelters and in rescue programs. There are so many wonderful animals put down each day. I urge you to adopt your new friend from a shelter or rescue program. Save a life (or more!).

The Atlanta Humane Society has a waiting list that you can request to be put on for when a specific breed is surrendered. My sister just adopted the most adorable dog from them. They work with stopping hoarding and puppymill operations so your wait may not be that long. Regardless, I would gift your girlfriend a stuffed animal with a tag stating that your new best friend is waiting, and take her to the shelter to meet the puppies. That way, you find the best fit. Believe me, she will love you for that surprise.

Another good idea may be to give her a box of all the necessary puppy supplies - a dog bed, crate, shampoo, chewing toys, food, etc. and take them with you to the shelter.

Good Luck!

Does your Friend Know you are doing this? Even if she says she wants a pet, She might not realy mean it. I've talk'ed some about getting a dog, But I realy dont have the time to take care of it. Would not want someone to show up at my door with a puppy saying happy birthday...

You might want to try Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder which is where I found my beautiful purebred doberman. Actually, she is the second doberman that I got from the pound and I couldn't have been happier with either one. The first one was 7 months when I adopted her, and the one I have now was 4 years old. There is something to be said for getting an older dog who is a little more settled down. Puppies are adorable but they are a lot of work.
