I am a white femle in my 20s and am considering moving to Decatur. I won't have a car so ow is public transportation? know about Marta but is there a decent bus system? I'd also like to know if there are any racial tensions I should brace myself for. I have never been in the area and would love ANY feedback and advice for someone moving in.

MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority

You can search the site for FYI on the buses. There should be a number of routes that serve the Decatur area. There is a train station in Decatur and nearby Avondale, Candler Park and East Lake--several others, too.

Will you live in the City of Decatur or in the surrounding area?

The City of Decatur is diverse and considered to be a very desirable area. No need to 'brace yourself', just enjoy.

It is not easy to live in Atlanta without a car.

I am going to be in the Crestview area on Snapfinger woods drive, which is about the extent of m knowledge at this point. Based off what I've read I really hope that is within the city limits. Outside the city sounds undesirable!

That is outside the city limits of Decatur and transportation may be more limited. Marta has had some budget cuts during the past year. Getting to and from the grocery store, etc could become a major challenge.

Is that where your employment is located?

I would give this some thought.

So would I...that is nowhere near the city of Decatur. Frankly, the only zip codes in Decatur where I would consider residing are 30030 (city) and 30033 (north of city). I've lived in both and it has been great.

I pray for a future where threads like this are not necessary.

The OP is asking legitimate questions. What is the problem?

Even though areas with a Decatur address are varied, there are more Decatur address areas worth living in than just zip codes 30030 and 30033 (and I've lived in both as well).

What one has to look at:

1. Job location
2. Commute
3. Car availability
4. Safety

To the Original Poster...where will you be working?

No doubt...I was simply offering my take on it and was considering the OP's carless status as well. South Decatur is built on a template that is decidedly suburban; living w/o a car there would be pretty difficult. Decatur 30030 is very walkable(and bikeable), on the other hand; even 30033 has areas that have walkable access to all amenities (Toco Hills, North Decatur Plaza, Suburban Plaza, Shamrock Plaza/North DeKalb Mall).

True. I understand now where you were coming from...
