It seems like every time the AJC prints an editorial bashing the upcoming transportation sales tax its written by some Fayette Co official (or former official). Another calling card for these editorials is that they are short if not void of facts. One was that only 5% of people in the Metro-Atlanta region use transit...WRONG...that number is 11.43% as of the last census. Today there was a real winner...this guy tried to say that the subsidy for roads is MINUS $1.73 per person (and he sited a 1990 study...I dont think that was right even then) These people are so vehemently against this 1 cent sales tax and seem to be getting a disproportional amount of press. A county official reping 106,567 people shouldn't be dictating his flawed ideology to the rest of us and its irresponsible on the AJCs part to promote it without the caveat of what Fayette county represents to the bigger picture. I'm sure the people in Fayette Co are lovely people, but these people you elect...
If you are against something thats fine, but if you have to use made up #'s to support your position...what does that say?

That is really dumb. You can't let the cultural and financial center of a metro go to crap and expect the region to still be attracted and grow.

Wow. I live in and love Fayette County. I also love Atlanta. I am not alone.

Much of the anti-transit sentiment has to do with not wanting to further connect Clayton with Fayetteville.

Fayette County does not belong in the T-SPLOST region. They did not want to be in it and they will vote against it, in mass. Even though much waste exists in the T-SPLOST, mostly due to integrating outlying counties and buying their votes with pointless projects, I still hope it passes.

As a side note:
In order to pass a grand vision for transit in the entire Atlanta region, specifically Commuter Rail, planners are going to have to understand the mindset of Fayette County and other outlying counties. Planners are going to have to design and sell it differently here than in places like Cobb, Dekalb, and Gwinnett. They must understand that places like Fayette County are largely rural and they want to stay that way. And guess what... there is nothing wrong with that.

Very well said, tikigod.

I honestly dont know what/why they were thinking putting Fayette Co in this region and not Forsyth. That really makes no sense. I have no problem with people voting no if its in their own interest to do so. What I have a big problem with is Fayette Co officials (past/present) using outdated/false information and the AJC sticking it on an editorial page without the least big of fact checking and making it out to be more representative of the region that it is

why does every other county hate atlanta? and replacing fayette with forsyth would definitely not improve the odds of this thing passing.

Fayette county is scared that they'll turn into Clayton county. It's a stupid, unwarranted fear but it's how they feel. So any means to connect Fayette to its northern neighbors (especially by transit) is vehemently opposed by the government there.

FUN FACT: Fayette county has one of the lowest growth rates of any county in metro Atlanta, so if they want to continue to distance themselves from the city (and the airport) that causes it to exist, then I guarantee no one will even know that they're gone.

The mess that Clayton County has become does indeed have a much stronger affect on the opinions / fears of people in Fayette County. You've got the LEAST desirable and most economically challenged county in all of metro Atlanta smack up against one of the longtime most desirable and AFFLUENT counties in the metro -- in some places with nothing more than an imaginary county line dividing neighborhoods! No wonder Fayette Countians are in an extreme defensive / survival mode!

Fayette County should not be part of the Atlanta Regional Commission. If it were in the Three Rivers PD with neighboring Coweta and Spalding counties, none of this would be an issue and they would be gunning for every share of the TSPLOST they could get.
