I am not one to always beat up on the media but this story is very slanted as there is no comparision to May's #'s. We all know claims are much higher this June then last but that is the only # they provided in the story. Knowing how it compares with May would be much more helpful.

Yeah, good point. They're stating the obvious. Who doesn't know that the number of claims is up year over year from this time 2008?

The information people want to know and need to know is what is the current trend, up or down. On a national level, we have been trending lower, as continuing claims and new claims are moving in the right direction, although still not good.

Here is the answer and info: in GA initial claims rose 13,320 or 17.7% from May 2009 to June 2009.

Jobless claims aren't a very good indicator. When people's benefits run out, they're no longer counted as "jobless/unemploymen claims". A better measure is the unemployment rate which doesn't rely on actual insurance claims but instead whether or not someone is LOOKING for work.

The BLS has very specific criteria for what goes into the U1 - U6 measures

It's never smart to move somewhere without a job unless you have a lot of money saved up. That's especially true during these hard times.
