My college age son and his roommates are renting a house in the Oakhurst part of Decatur. Can someone tell me about this area, i.e, crime, amenities, general feel of this area? According to the description of the house they are renting, it is 1 block from the village.
Thanks for any input.

Sounds like a pretty sweet situation to me. I never hear about any serious crime in the area; the Decatur PD does a really good job of keeping a lid on things. The neighborhood has been gentrifying at a pretty fast and steady clip over the past few years...the commercial district is great, and I would say that it definitely qualifies as one of the city's 'hot' neighborhoods. I'm sure you'll hear some love for Oakhurst from some of its residents before the day is out.

I've lived in Oakhurst for a little more than a year and I really enjoy it. I'm in my late 20s, female. Oakhurst has a great vibe, and I love having that little commericial area nearby -- U Joint, Mojo's, Mezcalito's, Nectar are great. I think they're also putting an Irish pub where the Seen Gallery used to be next to Scottish Rite. It's really convenient, and a great spot to hang out. U Joint and Mojo's have trivia nights, which is fun.

There are a lot of young families (with young kids) living in the area. I feel pretty safe, though we do have some petty crimes. Don't leave anything valuable in your cars, don't flaunt your electronics (make sure flat panel TVs can't be seen from the street) -- you know, common sense stuff, and your son should should be fine.

Is your son attending Emory? If so, it's about 3 miles away, about a 15 minute drive. Not too bad.

I like the neighborhood, and I know two couples who live there. They rave about it.

Actually he is attending GA State. He has 2 roommates that are attending GA state and 1 is at GA Tech. At first, they had ruled out Decatur but after realizing how close they are to GA State (about 5 miles) they found this house that seems to be a great fit for them. 4 bedrooms, 3 baths, and the landlord is okay with college students. I think they like the thought of a big backyard most of all after being in the dorms and apartments for the last few years. Just wait until they have to cut the grass..hmm..

Cool -- I'm actually starting a doctoral program at Georgia State in the fall. From the Oakhurst area to GSU, going south on DeKalb Ave is a short drive, with not too much traffic (though some stoplights). Not a bad commute at all!

I know this thread is a few years old, but I'd love to get some updated info about Oakhurst.

We're interested in renting a home in Atlanta and have been checking out the various neighborhoods over the summer. Someone on my previous thread recommended Oakhurst, and we went to have a look last weekend. And...we liked it! It seems to have everything we wanted - community vibe, walking distance to MARTA and a few restaurants/pub, nice park nearby, community garden, some off-street parking. Schools are not an issue for us - my son is in college.

So...what's the scoop on Oakhurst? I've read the Wikipedia article and I found the neighborhood association, but can't find a lot of other info online. What are the positives and negatives of Oakhurst? How are the crime and safety? Anything to look for or avoid in terms of streets?

And finally...is it likely we can find a pet-friendly rental home there for $1500-$1800/month? I've seen a few over $2000 but that would really be pushing it for us.

Oakhurst is wonderful. I'm sure some of the neighborhood residents will chime in (although since this is such an old thread, you might be more likely to elicit responses if you started a new one).

FYI, you can find crime data for City of Decatur (including the Oakhurst neighborhood) on CrimeReports.com. For crime data about surrounding areas in unincorporated DeKalb, search on CrimeMapping.com.

There's not much available as a rental in Oakhurst on FMLS at the moment, just one listing on Feld for $2,000/mo. But since that's a renovated 4/3 you should certainly be able to find something smaller in your price range as new rentals come available. Also, of course, most rentals never make it into the multiple listing service, so check CraigsList. (And, don't forget, rents are negotiable too, just like sales prices.)

Finally, Oakhurst is a very internet savvy neighborhood. There's a great neighborhood web site: Oakhurst Neighborhood Association with links to their Twitter and Facebook pages as well a sign-up section for their active YahooGroup. It's a good place to start your investigations.

Very family friendly, great neighborhood vibe, I have a 12 year old that I feel comfortable being fairly free range with, so I'm sure your grown child will be fine

Ha, free range children! My son is 6'3" and a black belt, so I don't worry about him a lot. But he does frequently come home in the wee hours of the morning (and I have a dog that occasionally demands to be walked at 3 a.m.), so safety at all times of day and night is important.

IntownHomes, thanks for suggesting the CrimeMapping site - hadn't seen that one before. And...I started to create a new thread but didn't want to hear "there's already a thread for this!" complaints.
