Hi! We are moving to ATL for my husbands work and are looking at where to live.
Decatur was suggested to us by a friend as it would fit with our lifestyle. His work, however is in Sandy Springs. What would this commute look like?
Any other suggestions on where to live? We would like to be away from the chain stores and restaurants and that lifestyle as much as possible. We need family friendly, we have 2 small children.
Thanks!

What is your price range? What type of housing are your looking for?

You could consider Sandy Springs or Dunwoody and have a much easier commute. Both towns have a family element, and while they're not as "small town" as Decatur, they're not "sprawling suburb" either. Your housing budget is also likely to go further.

Not a fun commute, no matter how you cut it. Can't really think of anywhere close to SS that has the same vibe as Decatur, with the possible exception of Mountain Park, a funky little oasis on the western edge of Roswell.

You might like the Chastain park area if your budget will permit. Lots of cute restaurants and green space. The commute would be short and the area is really cute.

Do a search, I posted a thread about this earlier when I was considering moving to Decatur (I did!). The commute will be no less than 30 minutes if you hit traffic at the right time and there's no accidents. We live in N. Decatur and I commute to exit 6 (Northridge) off of 400. 285 is a real pain in the a$$, but you can find other ways depending on where you work, and it's not that bad if you can be flexible about hours. I teach so I get there earlier and leave earlier than your normal 9 to 5ers. I would recommend trying it a few times before you buy to see what you really think about it. You could try looking in Chamblee, Drew Valley, or Brookhaven as well.
