Some great neighborhoods exist in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. The houses are older ranches but affordable and very convenient to everything. Lots of families are buying them and living in them as is before embarking on renovation projects.

Like bostonbaby, I am also relocating to Atlanta and looking for a family-friendly neighborhood with good schools. However, my hubby will be working at the airport.

My boys are young--2 and 6. The older is starting 1st grade and has Asperger's (a high-functioning form of Autism), so a school with good special ed services would be great.

We're coming from the cold, so we'll be looking for good neighborhood swimming pools!

We are also looking for something around $300k. It seems like we can get a lot of house down in Fayette County. What do you think? I'd love to live in the city, but I don't think we can afford it. Any other suggestions?

I would look at Newnan. Newnan is only about 25 minutes from the airport and 300,000 should afford you a nice home. There are great schools and not so great schools in Newnan so you just need to do your research. We moved here from CT. Boston is my favorite city. You will find that it can take a little time to adjust but GA is awesome. You will find many subdivisions have a community pool.

Dekalb county (Dunwoody/Sandy Springs) has the best schools. We just moved in February. Let me know if you could use info on properties (rentals)

Sandy Springs is in Fulton County.
And I think that there are quite a few posters on here that will take issue with the statement that DeKalb County has the best schools.
As far as school systems go, I think that Cobb or north Fulton would be a better bet.

Peachtree City if hubby is working at the airport! Also 300K won't get you anything intown that is safe/good schools/big enough for a family unless it is a condo.

I recommend Mableton, look on the map, it's only 11 miles from Atlanta but with a country feel. It's Atlanta's best kept secret. I live in Mableton and love it, lots of new subdivisions, plenty in your price range. My daughter takes the back road to town within 30 min. Plenty of shoping, etc. and near Vinings, which is a beautiful village, but pricey. I feel very safe here. I will be happy to provide you with more information.

If you do look into the Mableton/Smyrna/Vinings area, look at neighborhoods in these school districts:

Mableton Elementary
Nickajack Elementary
King Springs Elementary
Brown Elementary
Teasley Elementary
Russell Elementary

Here is a map of the attendance zones: http://www.cobb.k12.ga.us/Planning/2008-09AttendanceZones_Elementary.pdf (broken link)

...good luck!

Peachtree City is rated as a top retirement community in the country, and Peachtree teenagers on Facebook are bored. Now I have several years until my boys are teenagers, but these little factoids concern me because I'm not one for moving.

Your thoughts on these factoids? Are teenagers really bored?
