I don't know where one is willing to give away moving boxes free.

Perhaps, go by the stores, they usually are glad to give away boxes.

I've always have a fascination with moving boxes, although I must admit that I've never seen one actually move. What makes them move? I wonder.
How about asking for empties at (long drumroll...............) a "big box store"?

Try Craigslist or freecycle. I am sure you would score some.

Just about any liquor store will have a pile of boxes for the taking. Liquor and wine boxes are heavy duty.

I'd be hesitant to use produce boxes as they can attract insects.

Yep, show up at a liquor store around 4 pm and you should have a good selection. Also, drug stores have a lot and even grocery stores but only take the boxes that shipped dry goods.

As a side note:

Inspect any boxes CAREFULLY before bringing them into your home if you get them from grocery/liquor/etc stores.

Over the years I've heard stories from strangers and friends alike who have got boxes this way about everything from roaches to spiders to every other cootie imaginable, coming into their homes with "used" boxes. So inspect them WELL.

The Uhaul place where we rented a trailer and bought some moving boxes, has an area where folks can return used moving boxes for others to use. I don't know for sure if they are free, or just reduced, but you could check.
