I'm a retired, disabled vet in the Raleigh NC area. McCar is unresponsive, unreliable and flat out liars. Their GE subcontractor screwed up my hardwood floors while installing my frig. and they lied that it occurred after closing. I went to the BBB to see if that would light a fire, but nothing. If they are done, good riddens. The public does not need companies like McCar screwing good people because they think they can get away with it.

I have never heard of them having third party warranties. And yeah it's official they are done.

Just a note for the wise, wish we had know this, we NEVER had a year walk through by MDC. When MDC became something else they left all of their obligations behind, including whatever work should have been completed on our home. We tried for over a year to contact someone, anyone, to find out the status of our problems with our home, and never got anyone to talk to us. What we should have done is contact a lawyer and filed in court as a creditor against MDC and forced them to live up to their home warranty. At it was they skated off scott free and formed a new corporation, McCar I guess, we were never able to find out on our own. So, if McCar owes you a walk through or warranty work, check with your lawyer now and find out what you need to do to protect yourself.

What's done is done- however, you may still have some foothold. A lot of the things/items that go into your home are warrantied by others (manufacturers/ suppliers). So, depending on what issues you have, you may still be able to get it fixed.

McCar has 3rd party warranty (10 or 15 years depending on when you bought). However, after the first year, that warranty covers STRUCTURAL defects not cosmetic or many other items. Go over the warranty info. It's all spelled out.
You will now be dealing with the warranty company instead of McCar. If there's any dispute between the homeowner and warranty company, then there's mediation, then finally court.
It's pretty black and white anyway. These warranties were there to help homeowners in a case where the builder was unable to fix the problem, or if they went out of business...which seems to be the case.
So be happy that there is a 3rd party warranty (double check if you actually got one if you bought after 2006).
I sold many homes for McCar and another builder (2004-2007). They were a good company. You can only do so much when you are going out of business.
It may seem they were lying but that's either because the employees were getting different rules, or they were afraid of losing their job, or there was no leadership as things went downhill.
I can say they were one of the better builders and I always sold their homes with confidence.
Too bad it's going out of business.

When MDC changed to McCar, it was a name change and not a legal corporation redo. So they are still one and the same MDC/McCar. Legally there is no difference. I sold their homes when they went through the name change and it was seamless. Business was continued as usual and the only reason they changed the name was because they were expanding into other states (Florida) and there was another national builder with the same name; MDC. So they had to change the name to allow expansion. Not to avoid any obligation or start up a new company.

If you didn't have a walk through, it's because you did not call for one. It is optional, and at closing, you are told to call and set up the appointment if you want one. Perhaps it was forgotton.

If you called and they did not respond, that's different story and I cannot explain that...you should have pursued it legally to figure that one out. Again, I sold dozens of their homes and never had a walk though denied in the one year mark.

Yep they are done. I can't seem to find the AJC article on it that I read a few months back. Beazer homes has taken over a few of the neighborhoods.

I believe their new name is KM Homes
Find Your Next Luxury Home | Contact KM Homes
They have the same mailing address and website layout as the Mccar homes site.

We bought our home from MDC (just prior to their name change to McCar) in 2002. Our brand new house completely failed inspection and when we brought it up to MDC, they refused to fix anything. We had to threaten to walk away from our contract before they fix things to get our house up to code.

I did a search of McCar Homes and they came up on the BBB Review
"Based on BBB files, this business has a BBB Rating of F on a scale from A+ to F.
Reasons for this rating include:
  • 24 complaints filed against business
  • Failure to respond to 15 complaints filed against business."
