A home on a golf course with lake views would be great for us. We'd like the feel of a downtown area, not just strip malls. Originally from Chicago, we are now in Texas and are looking for a town with a good sense of community. We'd prefer an established town, rather than something new. Wondering about Cumming, Sandy Springs, Newnan. We've never lived in Georgia, so we are open to suggestions for our retirement location.

sandy springs is only 7 miles from downtown so it is not comparable to north georgia.

I assume you are looking for some type of mountianous area with lakes and golf.

Look into big canoe georgia, it is a 8,000 acre planned gated community and it is very nice. I spent much time there and it is paradise and only one hour from downtown atl and 30 minutes from the major malls of north atlanta.

Also a place called bent tree which is similar, i'm not sure if that is still the name of the development.

Here are the towns in North Georgia/Metro Atlanta I recommend for you (based on your criteria):

Newnan
Canton
Carrollton
Cartersville
Covington
Madison

Peachtree City is also very popular with retirees.
