WOWZERS!
I just watched an episode of Gangland on the History Chan. about the Black Mafia Gang in Atlanta.
Who knew your city had such a violent gang problem over the last 10 years.
Scary stuff.

anyway......
BMF wasn't really violent-they didn't have to be, they just made insane amounts of money. If anything they helped the crime rate go down. They had so much dope at such a cheap price that everybody was making money. In the streets when times are good and everybody is "eating", you dont have allot of drama.

Violent crime in Atlanta has gone way down - it still exists, but not as bad as it used to be. Our biggest problem is petty crime (break-ins, stealing) and we still have a lot of annoying bums/panhandlers which although mostly harmless, can make people uncomfortable and give our city a bad image. The city police department is undergoing many positive changes and I have already noticed more police since Mayor Kasim Reed took office.

Overall I think we're very safe, although it sounds like some parts of the city are having crime problems. It's hard to understand -- that area around Hairston Road was a solid, safe middle-class suburb for decades. We used to be involved in a business out that way and it was your typical Brady Bunch type community.

New in what sense though? The area was developed long before that -- we had friends who lived on Kenilworth (off Hairston) in the 1950s, and all that area was very built up by the mid 1960s.

You'll have to pardon me---a new high school was built in that area in the early 80's--new subdivisions were developed, etc.

I no longer live in this area and have little interest.

Everybody is living their own reality. What seems like a crime ridden crap hole to somebody is the next person's utopia.
