I'm still trying to figure out why a parent would keep their kid of school the whole day for a 30-minute speech.

Simple, cause they're stupid and have nothing better to do, than distract people who have things to do...

pootie, I think you're on the wrong track. If you think anyone who ever once didn't put their hand over their heart during the playing of the national anthem is unfit to be POTUS, what difference does it make who did it?

Obama said his grandfather taught him to put the hand over the heart while saying the Pledge, and to simply sing during the Anthem. Of course, he changed his practice when this turned out to bother people. This makes him unpatriotic?

People are trying so hard to shore up ridiculous reasons to hate this president, it makes me think oh no, their real reasons must be pretty ugly.

Now I am angry. I watched the speech this morning, and it was NOT broadcast at my children's school. Now we are sitting down as a family ready to watch it together having discussed it at length, and it is nowhere to be found.

I suppose I am more Libertarian at heart than anything else so the current trend in US politics doesn't do much for me.

I haven't given a great deal of consideration to what I deem minor personal issues with the POTUS. I think he is somewhat naieve if he truly believes addressing the student population, particularly on the first day back after a long weekend, will create lasting change.

In fact, the POTUS, impresses me as a person who doesn't particularly enjoy a lot of discussion or respond well to outside motivation. Chances are that many in his targeted audience are much the same. More internally motivated than externally?

The speech was given and I assume there will the required follow-up to be certain that the message was received.

Having never considered not completing my education or acquiring the knowledge and skills that would enable me to reach at least some of my goals I can't specifically identify which factors critically shaped me into this sort of person. Plenty of speeches were made by the adults in my personal life, in fact sermons were preached more often than not.

Kennedy was president when I was in 8th grade. He gave some inspiring speeches and yet I cannot say that hearing his ideals impacted me to the degree that some seem to believe is possible in 2009.

Only time will tell.
