Hello all! I'm new here so bear with me while I figure things out.

Anyway, I am posting because my husband has recently joined the Army. We live near St. Simon's Island and have found out that his unit is in Ellenwood. So after he graduates his AIT (advanced individual training) he will be posted in Ellenwood. I have visited the Atlanta area before but haven't strayed far from the Georgia Tech area.

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with pertitent information on the area. Below are some of our questions:

1. Where would be a good place to get a house/apartment? I have heard about the 3 counties within the area: Henry County, Dekalb County & Clayton County. I only have one child and she is only 1-year-old but I do still want to make sure that if we stay in the area that she would go to the best schools possible. Also, my husband may have to commute to Fort McPhearson. What places should I stay away from?

2. What is the average rent there? I am asking because even though the military will give us a basic allowance for housing (bha) we want to stay within our limits, you know?

3. How close would we be to civilization? Where I live now is a teeny tiny town pratically in the middle of nowhere. I have to drive almost an hour to get to a bigger city. Our mall is Wal*Mart and our actual mall is smaller than Wal*Mart. Anything would be an upgrade but I wonder how long I would have to drive to get to a mall or into a bigger city with more options.

4. What activities are available there? Skating rinks? Malls? Parks? You name it!

5. How is crime in the area?

I can't really think of any other questions to ask but please feel free to give me as much information as possible!

Thank you in advance!

Ellenwood is kind of quiet and old fashioned. I don't think there are any newer apartments in the area. You might want to consider living on the north end of Stockbridge or Dekalb/Clayton border in order to be closer to be close to the base. There is a brand new WalMart around the corner. There are a few new subdivisions in the area starting at around 225,000 and up. I have not seen any new apartments tho. I would lean more toward north end Stockbridge which would be Henry County. I'm not sure if you want to deal with Clayton County schools. Henry County is a much better system.
As far as malls and activities...there is only Southlake in Clayton County but Stonecrest is about 20 minutes away from north end of Stockbridge...it's a pretty decent mall so much more to offer than Southlake. If you're into bowling...there is a new bowling alley in Stockbridge which is pretty nice. The activities you would have to research on your own...I cant speak on that because I don't really know what you're interesed in specifically.
Crime is everywhere but I don't hear about Ellenwood on the news that often. It's like a small quiet country town...not much of anything going for it.
I wish I could be of more help...if I can think of anything else...I'll be back.
