After a couple of trips to Atlanta to visit the area with wife and child, we have narrowed are choice to either Alpharetta or Smyrna.

I work in Buckhead and will frequent the airport, so Smyrna makes sense for the short term. We are going to rent for 1-2 years, so either way its not life or death.

My big concern is that we eventually want to buy a home and secure a teaching position for my wife in Alpharetta...schools for our kids, etc look better in Alpharetta. So, would you live in Smyrna for 1-2 years knowing that you want to eventually move to Alpharetta? My wife thinks that we should go ahead and live in Alpharetta and get to know people, get plugged into a good church vs. saving commute time in Smyrna.

What do you guys think?

What normally happens when people rent for 1-2 years first is they become familiar and comfortable with an area, then eventually the other areas seem foreign to them and they no longer want to move into a new area.

I recently had a client from FL that rented for 13 months, then were ready to buy. We looked all over everywhere for 4+ months, based on desired schools, etc. Ultimately they moved less than 2 miles from their rental. LOL!

Given all that, I would rent in the desired end location, then buy in the same location.

Let me known if you need help, I'm a pro. LOL.

What about renting in Dunwoody near the MARTA station so you can still get to the airport without relying on 400? Just a suggestion. Tons of family friendly neighborhoods (The Branches, Dunwoody Station) are all great. Don't mean to confuse you even more but it may be a good temp location where you can still explore Alpharetta but check out an area closer to all.

I have to agree; this would be my choice over the other two, considering the list of OP's needs...much more direct access to Buckhead, as well. I lived for years in The Branches and loved it.

Smile Getting to Buckhead

I have a good friend who lives in Smyrna (lovely) but it takes them 1 1/2 hours in traffic from their home to their office in Buckhead. Just FYI.

ps. Don't know your rental budget, but here are some rentals in good Dunwoody neighborhoods I pulled from Craigslist:

– Wonderful Dunwoody home, great location, excellent schools (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/apa/1526390936.html - broken link)
Stunning Private Dunwoody Home $1650 Wooded Yard Hardwoods Stream (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/apa/1524302307.html - broken link)
All Brick Colonial, Renovated, Big Deck (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/apa/1517406827.html - broken link)

I would vote for Smyrna / Vinings. The 1 1/2 hour commute to Buckhead is the biggest exaggeration I have read on these boards. 30 minutes tops. Alpharetta is generic and suburban, where Smyrna and esp the Vinings area has that close in look and feel. Give it some thought. Basically, suburbanites will tell you to go to Alpharetta, city types will say Smyrna / Vinings.

btw: Vinings is not a city. It's a district, much like buckhead. It's part of both Smyrna and Atlanta.
