I think most people just assume its downtown, but I would argue its really midtown. This is in regards to population, density, scenic stuff, restaurants, parks, LIVABILITY, etc. Downtown is just so cold, it's all hotels, offices, touristy crap, stadiums, and homeless people. (I have a theory that people think Atlanta is ghetto because the only parts of the city they see are around the stadiums or from the interstate.). Downtown needs around 100,000 more people that are in the middle class to reclaim being the center of the city.

The center of the city in the minds of most Atlantans is Five Points.

I don't think Atlanta has a metaphorical center. Not to get too theoretical, but I tend to agree with Rem Koolhas: "[Atlanta is] a sparse, thin carpet of habitation, a kind of suprematist composition of little fields. Its strongest contextual givens are vegetal and infrastructural: forest and roads. Atlanta is not a city, it is a landscape." Atlanta is posturban.

If I had to pick an epicenter for the city of Atlanta, I would probably pick the intersection of Peachtree and 10th.

Atlanta's center was Five Points. But new centers are emerging while Five Points has been displaced as Atlanta's heart. Centennial Park is more significant than Five Points. I don't think Atlanta has a center, but as described in the post above, Atlanta is becoming increasingly amorphous.

I would say the whole Atlanta urban core is the center.
