Hi Everyone!

I'll be in Atlanta for the Hinman Dental Convention in March and it's been great researching restaurants, etc. on Yelp and Trip Advisor. I pretty much know what I want to do and see while I'm there but I'm concerned about how to get to it.

We're not renting a car so I'm thinking we'll be taking Taxis. Is Atlanta the type of city where you can easily hail a taxi on the street or do you need to phone one? I've read (and seen some video) of the wierdness that happens on MARTA and think I'd rather go the Taxi route.

And how safe is it downtown at night? I'm staying at The W on Ivan Allen Jr. Blvd. Is it safe to walk down to FAB or to Dogwood (Restaurants)?

Thanks for the help!

If you are staying at the W downtown - then you can easily hail a cab. Restaurants can call a cab for you too but there should be cabs nearby FAB.

The Dogwood would probably have to call you a cab as there is no cab stand in front of it.

You can walk to FAB. It's too far to walk to Dogwood IMO.

This is a nice find downtown too: Welcome to Social - Intown Dining at it's finest!

Rathbun's by Chef Kevin Rathbun of Rathbun's & Krog Bar - Best Overall Restaurant is a quick cab ride from downtown too.

No Weirdness on Marta but if you prefer a taxi your hotel will have them ready. It is completely safe to walk around near your hotel at night.

You should not have a problem during the Hinman. There are also several nearby hotels that you can go to to flag a taxi. Depending on the restaurant you go to, you will probably need them to call a taxi for you for the return trip. Most of the taxi drivers will know the Hinman is going on.

The Hinman is a very large convention, downtown will be crowded with dental folks.

Of course there are isolated (and very seldom) incidents on MARTA, but 99% of the time you'll find it incident-free. I've been riding MARTA for many years and have never seen anything even remotely similar to the video above...it's one of the safest rail systems in the nation.

Downtown is relatively safe as well, especially when there is a convention in town. The most that might happen is that someone will ask you for a handout. Just act like you don't hear them and keep walking - it always works for me.

I both drive a car in Atlanta and ride MARTA regularly. I've never had anything worse happen to me on MARTA than overhearing some unsavory, overly-loud conversations. On the road, I've come close to losing my life twice and totalled my truck in one accident. You'll be right next to the Civic Center MARTA station while you're staying at the W and it's a great amenity to have nearby, though taxis will work too.

I hope you enjoy the W. My wife and I got to stay there soon after they opened and it's really nice. It has a sweet view of the city from the gym. I recommend FAB. It's pricey, but has a nice interior and a good take on French classics. Also, one block south of FAB is Social, a French/Moroccan restaurant and my favorite in the city.

Have a great stay and please don't let anyone talk you out of walking around downtown or riding MARTA. You can have a safe, good time doing both. That said -- I wouldn't necessarily recommend walking to Dogwood from W. You would walk past an area where a steady stream of homeless people make their way to and from a large shelter. Not to speak ill of the homeless or services for them, but it wouldn't be the best way to experience our city.

The W has taxis lined up across the street, so that's not an issue. FAB is literally a block away, so shouldn't be an issue at all. I'd also recommend BLT, which is right in the W- great food, though a big pricey. Lastly, check out Room at Twelve, which is located in the Twelve hotel next to the W- great food there as well.

Thanks Y'All for the responses to my question. I was just a bit worried about getting a taxi back to the hotel after a night clubbing at The Eagle or whatever restaurant we end up at.

I'm not from a big city so I'll admit that the MARTA video posted above kinda freaked me out.

Thank You! I am so looking forward to my trip to Atlanta!

_Dale

Marta is safe, but don't get caught taking the last train to anywhere. If you miss your stop or take the wrong train they kick you off. Also on weekends it single tracking so be prepared to wait. As for train drama sometimes it's just entertainment. At times you can purchase CD's/DVD's, socks, paintings etc.

If you get a chance stop by the Varsity near GA Tech. Get off the North Ave station and just ask someone for directions. The Varsity :: What'll ya have!

One more land place to visit is the Waffle House.. http://www.wafflehouse.com/ourmenu.asp (broken link)
Order the All-Star..
