I just got a job at the airport and I'm moving here from Michigan. I have driven through Atlanta a few times and know how bad traffic can be. I'm looking for an apartment near the airport. Does anybody have any suggestions on where I could move so that I do not need to commute too far, but still live in a low crime area. I just found out today, and I've got until Monday to figure it out! Thanks in advance.

Personally I would recommend some of the intown neighborhoods. If you lived in Midtown, Atlanta Station, Lindbergh or in the city of Decatur you could easily ride Marta down to the airport and not deal with traffic at all. Even if you wanted to drive the commute would be reverse and not as bad (except for the part north of I-20). Alternatively you can look into Peachtree City. Its a suburb south of the airport where the commute isn't terrible. Not nearly as much to do down there though. Its really going to depend on what else you are looking for and how much you can afford.

Most of the towns around the airport are VERY rough. Search this forum for Clayton County, South Fulton County etc.

On the other hand, DON"T believe everything you read on this forum about the southside, please talk to people who currently live there (such as myself). Half of the things on here about the southside are from people who read stuff in the newspaper or hear it from the media, or, I love these, the "Data Driven Society" (who use the facts to come up with everything, knowing that facts can be biased too) that have never lived down here.

Yes, downtown is convenient (as far as Marta), but, there are nice areas on the southside that are close to the airport as well. Peachtree City was mentioned, you will be about 35-40 minutes from the airport (traffic going 85 north is a bit heavy).

I'd definitely recommend living somewhere that gives you easy access to MARTA, preferably somewhere on the North/South line so you don't have to change trains at Five Points station. Even if you plan to drive, your car will eventaully break down or get wrecked and you'll be happy to have the option.

There are nice areas to the south of the city, but a 40 minute freeway commute is exactly what is sounds like: Hell.

Thanks everybody that responded. I found a place in Stockbridge off of Rock Quarry Road. The area seems nice, and there's a lot of new buildings in the area. The rent was a bit more than I was hoping for (I thought the South had lower cost of living), but I guess you get what you pay for.

I figure if I don't like it, I can always move closer to the city. At least this will give me time to get adjusted to these crazy roads.

Default one final suggestion

Look at Smyrna (as close to I-285 as possible). You can take 285 south from there and be at the airport in ~20 minutes (even during rush hour).

I second Smyrna. Close to the airport. More interesting then a lot of suburbs and safe. Good recommendation. (although the guy has already found a place so I'm not sure how much this matters anymore).
