I'm in the market to purchase a used car cash willing to pay maximum of $1,500. This car is just to get me from point a to point b (and point "c" as an added bonus ) I'd like to hear some suggestions besides Craigslist as to where in the Atlanta proper should I be looking to purchase such a car. Make and model does not matter, I just need some good transportation. While I am gainfully employeed, no job is promised and I am somewhat afraid that if I purchase a car with a car note in this season, I'll get laid off and end up getting my car repo'd. You know these jobs today hire you today and fire you tomorrow.

I know back in the day there was Bishop Brothers Auto Auction on the then Stewart Ave (but they would not let you test drive the car which was upsetting). Not sure if there are other Auto Auction places that will allow me to test drive a car before I make a bid and I really dont trust craigslist as there are so many scams.

Again, the budget maximum is $1,500. Thanks for your input. Any information will be helpful.

Most auctions nowadays are not open to the public, and they don't normally let you test drive the cars even if you are a dealer. In that price range, Craiglist would be your best bet, honestly. Any dealer that has a car for sale for $1,500 only paid $500 for it, and that's likely all its really worth- at least with a private party you've got a chance of getting something that's halfway decent.

Agree, purchase from a private party, run carfax and pay a mechanic $50 to check it out. Use the newspaper, craigslist etc to find the cars.
