My family and I are relocating to Georgia from the suburbs of Chicago (Naperville). I will be attending graduate school at the University of Georgia, but I am not too thrilled with the idea of living in Athens...

I have 2 little kids, ages four and one. Excellent schools are important to me as we will likely be in the area for about 4 to 5 years as I complete my PhD. We are an African-American family so it is important to me my children are not the only African-American children in the community (or one of just two or three others). I am also very "not-Southern" so the prospect of living in a very, very "country" community is not at all appealing...Ideally I'd like a nice suburban community full of excellent schools and well educated families who don't all happen to be white. Too much to ask???

I'm wondering what city would be best to live in that would allow me to have a reasonable commute to Athens without living in an extremely rural area. I'm considering Dacula and Suwanee based on what I've read about the schools, the proximity, and the benefits of living in Gwinnett County. How far is the drive from Dacula to Athens? Would a daily drive from Suwanee to Athens be feasible? (I'm told that Suwanee is very nice/diverse/convenient place to live compared to Dacula). Is there any other city you would recommend?

We will be renting a home, since we have no intention of sinking money into a depreciating asset any time soon. I've seen lots of 4 bedroom homes renting for $1,100 to $1,500/month, which is definitely our price range.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I would recommend Dacula over Suwanee for a commute to Athens. Dacula to Athens might not be too bad if you are close to GA 316. Dacula is also nice, diverse, and convenient. There are few areas in metro Atlanta where you would be the only African American family; Gwinnett especially is very diverse.

If your kids are going to be in elementary school only -- make sure you investigate Barrow Elementary in the heart of Athens. It used to be very good. Clarke county used to have "school choice (apply to any school you wish)", and recently moved to "old fashioned districting (go to school where u live)", so not sure what the effect of that is.

Middle and High school, you are better off outside Clarke county.

Have you been to Athens? I am from Evanston originally, and I think you will find it more familiar and comfortable than the exurbs of Atlanta. Athens is practically the definition of a college town, not "country" at all. I'd check it out before signing yourself up for a long drive.

It depends what your definition of 'country' is. This guy would find living in Athens (after Chicago) like living in the country. Athens is not a diverse community -- it is a college town. Suwanee would be a tough commute. There must be communities on the other side of !-85 and closer to 316 -- even Duluth would be a better match I would think.

Thanks to all for your input; it is especially comforting to know that Gwinnett County is so diverse and that the commute from Dacula is do-able. I have found that Athens is probably not a viable option because Clarke County schools rank very, very low... especially in comparison to Gwinnett County schools. I am willing to sacrifice the drive so that my children can get a better jump-start on their education. However, I will check out some private schools in Athens prior to making my decision (Athens Christian School and Athens Montessori). Again, thanks SO much for your input!

Again, check into Barrow Elementary (near 5 Points which is the most expensive area in Athens) if your kids are currently in elementary school.
