New Buckhead High School (Atlanta, Sandy Springs: 2013, neighborhood, middle schools)

This article in today's AJC may be of interest to intown families.

It says Atlanta is to build a new high school in Buckhead (they hope to open by 2013).

North Atlanta High School would become a middle school.

This is cool--and shows the growing and high popularity of Sutton Middle School.

I hope the new high school is named Buckhead High School.


The new converted middle school should get a localized neighborhood name.

I agree with Buckhead High School.

What are your suggestions for a neighborhood name? Peachtree Creek Middle School? Peachtree Battle? West Paces? Wesley? Looks like it is acutally in the Wynwood Neighborhood, but that is too myopic, IMO.

I like Buckhead High School. Perhaps one day it will have the same cachet as Beverly Hills High School does now.

this just seems like a colossal waste of money. a huge percentage of the buckhead residents dont even use the public schools. of the ones that do, most pull their kids out before they get to sutton. i am not sure if sutton kids are bused in, but the demographics of that school are a sharp contrast to the demographics of buckhead. i just hope that they arent using a growing bused-in population to justify the millions of dollars that will be spent on a new school.

Um, you are so stuck in the 90's.

If you read the article above, you would see that more and more Buckhead residents are sending their kids to the public schools. It started with the six elementary schools and now it is swelling up to Sutton. The high new interest in the public schools will more than likely make its way to the high school in the next 3 to 8 years. This is why there is a need for a second middle school.

This is also following the same pattern that happened in the Inman/Grady Cluster and the City of Decatur.


In my opinion--the next area to follow this pattern...the Toomer Elementary/East Lake Elementary/Coan Middle area (this cluster is already zoned for Grady High...which will probably accelerate things).

If I had to choose off the top of my head right now, I would say Wesley Middle or Peachtree Creek Middle. (Actually, the more I think about it, I think both of these would be great names for the new middle school).


And...based on the the boundaries they have now, I would zone Jackson Elementary, Smith Elementary, and Garden Hills Elementary to Sutton Middle; and then Brandon Elementary, Rivers Elementary, and Bolton Academy to Wesley/Peachtree Creek Middle.

(Those involved with the Buckhead schools...ie. residents, etc...would the above suggestion be a good split in y'all's opinion?)

And...it has always bothered me because "North Atlanta" is actually the area east of Buckhead and west of Chamblee and south of I-285 (rough boundaries).

This school was originally Northside HS. The name fits as it faces Northside Drive, not just that it was the school on the 'Northside.' The name change to North Atlanta came when North Fulton was closed and the two merged as THE public high school for all the northern part of Atlanta/Buckhead.

What I see as more likely is that it will keep its same name and just change the word 'high' to 'middle' thus North Atlanta Middle School. It does seem that Atlanta city schools are more apt to change names (Southside to Maynard Jackson HS a recent example), so not a set in stone type of thing, but can think of several of the old DeKalb high schools that are now middle schools that kept their original names: Shamrock, Henderson, Peachtree and Sequoyah come to mind. Ridgview HS in Sandy Springs is now Ridgview MS, so Fulton County has done this as well.

Yes, I remember in the news when they merged Northside High and North Fulton High. A lot potential names were thrown around--and I remember "Buckhead High" was a suggestion.



It would be wise for APS to give the new middle school a new name--for a new identity and a new beginning.

The thing with the "North Atlanta" name is that I don't think it has as much community connection or the history behind it--so a name change might make more sense.
