The key to "surviving" Atlanta rush hour is to live in a place where you have alternative routes. In Memphis, since you mentioned it, if you need to get from East Memphis to downtown, you can take Poplar or the interstate. If Poplar is backed up, you could take Park Avenue for quite a while.

However, if you need to go East/West in Atlanta that is sometimes difficult.

Keep in mind that you start with a set amount of miles between your home and your destination. That doesn't change. So, if Kennesaw is 20 or so miles to Atlantic Station, then you have a minimum of about a 30 minute commute, with no unexpected slowdowns (volume, hitting every red light, accidents.)

Commuting is a quality of life issue for some people and for others it isn't a factor at all (except when something really messes things up). I know many people who won't work further than a few miles from where they live and I know others who don't mind a 25 mile commute.

Traffic is pretty bad here. However, it isn't the worst in the country.

Especially in Pinellas County. There are actually many cities that have worse traffic than Atlanta, despite Atlanta having gotten the anecdotal reputation as having this miserable traffic.

I think the truth about Atlanta traffic is that certain routes at certain times can be pretty bad. The other truth is that many other routes are fine and the routes that are bad are only bad for a short window during rush hour.

My personal experience driving to my office in Alpharetta is that despite the ride being all city streets with traffic lights, the ride is still waaaaaay better than my ride into Waltham and Boston were when I lived in that area. On the several occasions that I've driven downtonw in rush hour, sure there is some congestion, but the traffic always moves and has never been beyond what you would normally expect in rush hour in a big city.

Contrast Atlanta with LA, NY, DC, Boston, where you usually find bad traffic 24/7 and that traffic can include long waits at tolls and bridges/tunnels. There is almost none of that kind of traffic in Atlanta.

I guess if you come from the back woods of Georgia or some farm in the midwest, then traffic in Atlanta is the worst you've ever seen. If you come from LA or NY, then frankly it's not that big of a deal. I think the fact that many people in Atlanta come from small towns or small cities, and the fact that natives have seen huge increases in traffic over the last 20 years, helps to increase the mystique about traffic in Atlanta. That mystique has grown and if you speak to people who have never been to the area, they assume that no one can go anywhere in Atlanta due to the 7/24/365 bumper to bumper gridlock. It's really funny.

I have lived in various parts of Atlanta and never experienced more than a 30 minute commute to work. It all depends on when you work, where you work/live/play, etc.

If you don't work the traditional 8-5 hours, you can DEFINITELY make it between Atlantic Station and Kennesaw in less than half an hour (depending on where in Kennesaw you live). There are a lot of people who choose to work 7-4, 10-7, etc, to avoid traffic.

Oftentimes, I noticed that the people who complain about traffic are one or more of the following:

- they have never left the South and have never experienced traffic in a city of our size
- they live way too far out of Atlanta to consider living IN Atlanta
- they just happen to be using our interstate system to get through Atlanta.. in the middle of traffic hour... not a good time to be trying to "pass through" a city.

If you choose to live farther out, that's cool, but the best part of Atlanta is that you CAN choose to live closer in to the city if you'd like. That's the beauty of the city. And yes, of course, if it rains or there is a big accident, you will get stuck in it... but I know there are also many folks who choose to just get another hour or work done so they can get out later in the week or will go grab a happy hour or whatever.... the bottom line is that you have choices
