Perdue seeks a shake-up of state government *| ajc.com (http://www.ajc.com/news/georgia-politics-elections/perdue-seeks-a-shake-291879.html - broken link)

Quote:
Perdue’s plan, which would require approval of voters in November, would allow future governors to appoint the state’s insurance, labor and agriculture commissioners, as well as the state school superintendent.
Thoughts on this? I think the whole 'cost savings' thing is a stretch, I'd like a more convincing/solid reason to back this move.

i wish he would just go away without trying to bury this state 10 feet under.

he basically wants to make the governor a vassal. hell no!

This scares the hell out of me. No way, no how.

I will also be glad to be rid of Perdue. Worst Governor in decades, imo.

So yall who oppose this really would hate it if you couldn't vote for the Ag Commish? You would be scared if the Labor Commisioner was appointed? I imagine that has more to do with your dislike of the man who came up with this than anything else.

Well, I'm sure some of you will hurl the comments at me, but I agree with him. The executive branch of government should report to the Governor and the cabinet should be appointed. Georgia is one of just a handful of states that elects positions such as Commissioner of Labor, Insurance, or Agriculture. Electing those offices is nuts in my opinion and destroys the way the 3 branches of government work and balance each other. How can a Gov have a set of policies if the cabinet officers are all politicians and may be of a different party. That's nuts and not how most states or the federal gov't work.

As for Perdue, I'm not saying he's the greatest Gov in history, and I've only lived here for one term, but some of you just have this vitriole for him that reminds me of the vitriole for George Bush. Are there any Republicans that you folks would/could support, or is it plainly the fact that you're liberal in your politics and therefore all Republicans are wrong/bad/evil.....etc.? Does the fact that the majority of voters elected him twice eat at you? Sorry.

I'm a republican and I've been very dissatisfied with perdue.

as for the issue here, I see their point but can't say I'm behind it at this time.

I vote almost straight republican on the federal level, but when it comes to state and local government I vote for several democrats. There are many democrats who are in line with conservatives on most issues, and I'm willing to trade off a policy ideal here and there to get what I think is the best candidate.

I'll have to give this some thought.

Hmm. I think I do as well, at least at first glance.

I have nothing but respect for George Bush the elder. I voted for him. You mean GWB, I assume?

I could vote for someone like Newt, I suspect, depending of course on which office and on who he was running against. Context is important to me.

Well, if someone that you think has had 200 bad ideas in a row comes up with idea #201, I can't blame those people for guessing that 201 will be bad too.

BUT, I am more curious to judge this on its merits/demerits. I don't really see a good reason for it, though I'm open to suggestions.

Gee Neil, why don't you tell us how you REALLY feel?

At any rate, while I have nothing but utter contempt for Boss Hogg, I do vote for Republicans from time to time.

I voted for Karen Handel for Sec. of State, and I've voted for several others.

I stand by my statements re: Perdue. I've been here over 23 years now, and he has been the absolute worst of the bunch since I've been here. I would add that I consider him him to be nothing short of an embarrassment to the State.

perdue isnt republican. he is like that big bank executive/communist constantly trying to grease his own pocket and intruduce extra fees to the consumers.

anybody remember what the outcome of his 10million bad loans/business ventures came out as? of course you dont. it was never heard of again.

i've met him in person (some public function diring his 1st term). he is likable enough but is totally incompatible with the direction GA has taken since 1995. He would be well suited for a mayor of temple ga or something of that composition and magnitude.

it is funny when people want to turn this into another reps vs dems nonsense.
