My brother and sister in law are thinking of buying a house in this area. Would love some thoughts on the school, especially from parents with kids there. Thanks!

I can't speak to your question but was wondering if anyone knew the status of discussions to dump the Montessori model due to budget constraints?

Briar Vista School

It's a good school--solid. It also feeds into good schools--Shamrock Middle and Druid Hills High.

I'd send my child there.

I was at a meeting yesterday and I am nearly 100 percent certain that the Montessori program as it is today will not be in place next year.

On top of the budget crisis in DeKalb, it sounds like the data is showing that Montessori isn't working at Briar Vista very well and the system officials sounded a bit panicked. (A note, the school system officials acknowledged that Montessori is working well for some children, but it is not working well for many children.)

Montessori will probably exist somewhere but it will even be less Montessori like then it already is.

With all that said, a challenge for Briar Vista parents is that if the Montessori structure doesn't work for their child, it has become increasingly difficult to get an acceptable administrative transfer.

I have not really been able to get a fix on Briar Vista lately, as my peers and I mostly have college age (or older) kids now. I know that when they were coming up, BV's reputation seemed to lag behind its' neighbors Morningside, Sagamore, Oak Grove and Briarlake. It seems like in later years there was some encouraging feedback, but that all seemed to hinge on the introduction of the Montessori structure.
