Old news and actually I believe that it would've been a lot more effective for all of the newly chartered cities up there to have formed as one city--thus making it easier to coordinate land use and transportation policy while avoiding unnecessary costs of duplicating services.

Why not explore having Atlanta and the existing south Fulton cities carve up the remainder of unincorporated Fulton, allow the cities to provide the majority of services and see Fulton as a county reduce to the minimum amount of governance that a county needs to have in place?

They already tried this when they made the North Fulton cities in 2005. A referendum was voted on to create a city of South Fulton out of the entire southern portion of fulton county, and voters rejected it.

I am well aware of this. The voters rejected a new city of South Fulton. That's why I proposed a carving up of that area between the exisisting cities (Palmetto, Fairburn, Union City, College Park, East Point and Atlanta -- Chattahoochee Hills as well).

The current Fulton County, as mentioned in the linked article by the OP is performing duplicate services with all of northern Fulton incorporated. If the rest of the county would incorporate, then Fulton could be reduced to the bare minimum of what a county should do. Sort of like a consolidation reduces government, this would be a consolidation between one county and multiple cities.

I was following every move of the 2005 vote. The referendum was whether the remaining unincorporated area of South Fulton could vie as a separate stand alone city. The voters there rejected that. My proposal is not create another city, just carve up what is left between cities that already exist.

It won't happen with the status quo, but if the Milton County establishment gains some serious steam, the status quo is no longer viable for the remainder of Fulton. Something like my proposal seems a good comopromise to keep Fulton intact and satisfy the northerners who feel they are supporting the rest of the county at an unfair amount.

What's the latest on this? I'm assuming Karen Handel will be the next governor since she's a Republican -- has she made any statements on the subject? If Milton is re-created, how far south will it go? How will it affect the city of Atlanta? Assuming some sort of regional transportation tax is passed, how will Milton' County's creation affect how the money is divvied up? You'd have to think they'll want a big piece of the action.

Won't ever happen. S. Fulton (city of Atlanta) needs N. Fulton's tax money.
