wow so much valuable information that has been given. I am def going to work with a realtor and this is just telling me that we should rent first..test out the waters, and then decide to purchase. I would rather pay the extra couple of bucks and figure things out before making the commitment to purchase again.

That's a personality question and a question of personal finance and what you can afford. Someone who buys a $75,000 house they can't afford is as over their head as the person who buys a million dollar house they can't afford.

Personally, I bought a nice house that was less than I could afford, but more expensive than what some other folks might be able to afford. Could I live with my family of five in a 1500 square foot house that cost $200,000? If I had to, but I choose to live more comfortably and pay for that comfort. Is that showing off? I don't think so, provided I don't ask taxpayers or anyone else to pick up the tab for my choice.
