Hi everyone. I live in NJ and would love to move b/c it's TOO expensive here. I understand that cost of living is cheaper in GA than NJ BUT pay and all is less too. I'm a single mom and have a 2 year old girl.

My question is - how is Doraville? how is the school system? How are jobs out there? how are the people?

Is there any other cities around the area that are nice? I'm just thinking more for my daughter and the fact that money is TIGHT

TIA for any suggestions!

Doraville used to be (60's & 70's) the redneck capital of Dekalb County. I am not saying that is good or bad. (I'm a redneck)
Doraville is now the immigrant capital of DC. I'm not saying that is good or bad. (My mother is an immigrant)

Doraville is the end of the northeast MARTA line (and Perimeter area is the north end of the north-south line). So it is probably possible to live without a car in that area. I looked up the greatschools website, and found 2 good elementary schools in that area (rank 9 and 8 out of 10. There is a shutdown GM plant in that area, that is potential/planned for redevelopment.

Why specifically Doraville?

Probably depends on what you are looking for. Perimeter probably has more jobs (mall, offices) within short distance.

I've had that song running through my head all day - "Dora-ville, a touch of country in the city..."

I'm not a huge fan of Doraville. I would look around for different jobs, then find a home near by. Finding good deals on homes should not be too difficult around the Atlanta area right now.

I agree. Truthfully, there is significant crime in this area if safety is an issue. I wouldn't live there.

That's basically a perfect description.

I think another factor you will hear from people is to not be swayed by some rumors that Atlanta hasn't been hit hard by the recession - it has. If you do not already have a job lined up, and you're a single-income household and money is as you say already "tight", you may want to hold off until you have more of a savings account that will allow you to survive for months without any income if necessary. If you search around the forum's older posts, you'll find plenty of degreed college grads who came here and have gone months (or longer) with no jobs to be found, etc. So plan ahead before such a move.

Thanks everyone!
I don't plan on moving until I do have a better savings. I'm just trying to do my research slowly b/c it IS a big decision and move - where ever I decide to go.
I'm not only looking specifically in Doraville but around the Atlanta or downtown area. Is that where it would be better to find a job?
URGH - this is just all aggrevating!! Working really hard and it's so hard to get assistance! I make too much $ they tell me - how is that when more than half my pay goes to daycare alone!! Sorry just venting a little

Thanks again.
