Fair enough, but it sounds like Atlanta never really planned for it. Their idea of managing it is blanketing the city with police and enacting stiff regulations to crack down.

If they instead limited to select locations (ex: Decatur, Piedmont Park, Virginia Highlands) and had police manage traffic like Daytona Beach, it would be a different story.

Instead - "OMG WHAT DO WE DO?!? LET'S MAKE THEM LEAVE! SHOO! SCAT! GET OUT OF HERE! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!"

Does anyone know why they decided to bring Freaknik back?
Thanks!

Being a bit new to the area, can someone fill me in on what "Freaknic" really is and what usually occurs over the weekend? Thanks

They have been trying for years and nobody came. The local news stations found out about it a few months ago and blew it up. Nobody would have known about it if the news didnt bring it up. The news is basically giving the event the free promotion that it needed

In a nutshell:

Traffic gridlock due to cruising. Women booty-shaking in convertables, or on the trunks of cars, which several gentlemen in the cars nearby videotape. Loud booming music coming from hundreds of cars at once.

You obviously didn't see or experience it at its peak. There was no way to manage it. It was absolutely and totally out of control.

The reason it became out of control is because the city didnt give them a permit for the local parks. If the city had given them the permits everybody would have been at the park instead of on the streets. I blame the city, if they are going to come anyway you might as well have them in the park verses in the streets, IMO

This is partially true, but it ignores the fact that parks close at an earlier hour than college kids like to stop partying. So, even if they HAD park permits, the party would have to move somewhere. Nobody is going to be granted a 24 hour park permit, or even a permit that allows use of a park until, say, 3 am.

It also ignores the fact that a lot of people would rather cruise/street party than go to a park and follow a bunch of family-friendly rules.

Sorry, Tony but I totally disagree. What park or parks to you propose to hold over 300,000 people? At its peak, it was that big. It became nothing more than a rolling party taking over and gridlocking sections of the city.

At its peak, things got so bad many restaurants simply closed down for the weekend. Lenox and Phipps both closed in the middle of the day on several occassions due to massive overcrowding. It started attracting an extremely bad element of "hangers on" that used the weekend as an excuse to do "whatever." Girls were getting attacked by roving groups of pigs. It became TOO big, TOO unruly.

I understand that some of you may want to romanticize something you've only heard of and never got to experience. Those of us who lived with it and were impacted by it have a different memory.
