People go the Hard Rock to eat? I thought it was more of a museum with munchies.

OK, let's break it down...according to you, everything 'between Buckhead and downtown' is a dump. That would include:

Tuxedo Park
Haynes Manor
Peachtree Heights
Peachtree Hills
Collier Hills
Ardmore Park
Brookwood Hills
Ansley Park
Midtown

Fail. Again.

We have to face it. Our downtown is the biggest joke. For the center of a metro of 5+ million it's a downright embarassment. I work downtown right now from 3p to 12a and the place shuts almost completely down by 8p. of course the touristy places stay open but there is maybe one convienience store open within 8 square blocks and no reasonable places to grab a quick lunch(@8-9p).

The bums are ridiculous. The city has just given lip service to addressing the problem.

The potential is there. That's what makes it so frustrating. People ARE out and about. Thousands of students live close by. Yet downtown is still a ghosttown that only serves the daytime corporate crowd.

It's time it got it together.

Agreed...there are glimmers of hope (the Centennial Park area is the best thing that's happened to DT in the last 20 years), but by and large we are throwing what could be one of our greatest assets out the window with both hands.
Underground Atlanta? We have squandered one of the few things that makes our downtown unique...the 'old city', preserved beneath our feet. I wish more of you could have known UA in its' first incarnation (late 60's - 70's)...it was great.
The Fairlie-Poplar District? Another hidden gem.
Woodruff Park? Built (and later rehabbed) at great expense. And now? Unkempt, unloved and harboring the odor of a public toilet.
Downtown is an absolute scandal...but no comeback will be made until some responsibility is taken for the safety and comfort of its' citizens.

Dont know if you have traveled outside of Atlanta b4 but every downtown in America shuts down by 8pm, even in NYC, DC, LA, etc. Only people that are out at night in NYC are tourist in Times Square, Rockafella Center, and the nightclub districts. People in every city in America travel into downtown to work and back to the suburbs at night. This just isnt in Atlanta, its in every city in America. Why do you think cities have rush hours? Because people in the burbs are going into the city to work and leaving after work hours. Downtown DC, Chicago, Miami, Houston, Philly, etc are just as dead at night unless you are in a nightclub district.
